Corvettes of Indian Navy : News and Discussions

It will need to go for offensive operations also. Say we need to conduct amphibious landings on Pakistani coast. They will mine the waters upto great distances.

In theory what you're saying is true . In practical terms how equipped are we to launch amphibious operations of the scale required in Paxtan's case. MCMV operations is much below what's required on the priority list but point taken .

Then there's the issue of operations in A&N region also.

I don't see any problems with operations there .

Range into deeper waters for MCMV and range along the coast for ASW Corvettes.

In theory we can take the basic hull of Arnala class , strip off the ASW equipment and add NASM-SR/MR missiles and make it a missile vessel too.

That can be done for MCMV equipment too.

Still doesn't answer if non magnetic hulls are a part of the ASWSWCs . The platform will remain the same be it OPVs or any operation we choose the vessel to specialise in . Here the issue is dual use or extended usage of ASW operations to include mine hunting at least in coastal waters . Besides what's the additional 200 Tonnes for in one of the classes of the ASW boats if operations are identical ?

But I don't think two sets of equipment will fit together.

I'd suspend my judgement for the moment.

Degaussing of the hull will probably be done, if some ad hoc MCMV requirement arises. That I can say for sure.

Nothing more as far as the hulls of asw swc go.

Movement on NGMV.

Confirmation that they will be armed with Brahmos.
"Further, the DAC granted approval for procurement of Brahmos Launcher and Fire Control System (FCS) for the Shivalik class of ships & Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs) for Indian Navy. With their induction, these ships would have enhanced capability of carrying out maritime strike operations, interdicting and destroying enemy’s warships and merchant vessels."

10,000 crore rupees for 6 vessels

That's approx 200 million USD a vessel. The cost of a 2400 ton hull (say Sarthak Class OPV) is nearly 60 million USD.

So this design is from naval design bureau?
Most probably.

I think when IN mentions its requirements in RFI and later in RFP then shipyards come with their own design but what I feel should happen is once a bidder wins then they must collaborate with NDB. Then the NDB will give them design and tell them to build it accordingly.

GRSE LAUNCHES IN HOUSE DESIGNED SECOND ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE SHALLOW WATER CRAFT

Posted On: 21 MAR 2023 6:53PM by PIB Kolkata

Kolkata: March 21, 2023

The Indian Navy’s second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASWSWC), built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, was launched by Smt Shashi Tripathi, President, NWWA (Western Region) here in Kolkata today. Shri Dinesh K Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command and Shri Arun Lal, former Cricketer and Commentator also graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively.

Interacting with the media, Shri PR Hari, Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE, said, the INS Androth is second in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) being built by GRSE for the Indian Navy. These ships are 77.6 meters long and 10.5 meters wide and require a draught of only 2.7 meters. Propelled by three diesel-driven water jets and a maximum speed of 25 knots, they will pack a punch as they will be capable of full-scale sub-surface surveillance of coastal waters as well as Search and Attack. The primary role of the ASW SWC is to conduct anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and mine laying operations. These ships are also capable of full-scale sub surface surveillance of coastal waters and various surface platforms and coordinated ASW operations with aircraft, he added.

These ships may be smaller in size but will pack a lethal punch. They will carry lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets and mines, close-in weapon system (30 mm gun) and 12.7 mm stabilized remote-controlled guns. The ASW SWC will be fitted with hull mounted sonar and a low frequency variable depth sonar, the CMD informed.

Shri Hari stated that GRSE is the only public sector shipyard in the country to have received the Raksha Mantri’s Award 2022 for designing the most silent ship, he said. That ship was INS Arnala, the first ship of the series that was launched three months ago. The Kolkata-based shipyard has also upheld the Government’s Atmanirbharata policy. The ASW SWC will have over 85% indigenous content.

I feel this is our LCS program. I am not comparing the firepower, tonnage and roles but just because of the seer numbers and spilt of program into two designs similar to that of LCS.

Of the 11 ships, seven will be indigenously designed, developed & manufactured by GSL and four by GRSE. The delivery of the ships is scheduled to commence from September 2026.

The acquisition of these ships will enable the Indian Navy to maintain its combat capability and meet various operational requirements such as Anti-Piracy, Counter-Infiltration, Anti-Poaching, Anti-Trafficking, Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations, Search and Rescue (SAR), Protection of Offshore Assets etc. The construction of these ships will generate an employment of 110 lakh man-days over a period of seven and half years.

Next Generation Missile Vessels

The contract for acquisition of six Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV) was signed with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) at a cost of Rs 9,805 crore. The delivery of ships is scheduled to commence from March 2027. The NGMVs would be heavily armed war vessels incorporating stealth, high speed and offensive capability. The primary role of the ships would be to provide offensive capability against enemy warship, merchantmen and land targets.

These ships will be capable of conducting Maritime Strike Operations, Anti Surface Warfare Operations and would be a potent instrument of sea denial for enemy ships especially at choke points. In defensive role, these ships would be employed for Local Naval Defence operations and seaward defence of Offshore Development Area. The construction of these ships will generate an employment of 45 lakh man-days over a period of nine years.

The indigenous manufacturing of these vessels will encourage the active participation of Indian shipbuilding and associated industries, including MSMEs. With the majority of the equipment and systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers, these vessels will be a proud flag bearer of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
