Corvettes of Indian Navy : News and Discussions

I have a feeling that our NGMV (Missile Boats ) are actually Corvettes only.

And for Missile Boats, we will likely have a smaller vessel with NASM-MR on it... Although I agree additional units should be ordered. And considering the low costs , it should be ordered.
When Indian Navy says NGD - It's actually a Cruiser

NGF - actually a destroyer

NGC - actually a frigate

NG OPV/ NGMV - more or less Corvettes

Underplay!

Going by the press release, the NGMV are meant to deploy to "choke points" - a reference to Persian Gulf, Malacca and Sunda straits. Veer class is not big enough for those missions. So the NGMV are likely to be compared to Khukri and Kora class ships.

There is no reference to propulsion, but if the ships were GT powered it would have been a news item worthy on its own as only LM2500 is a viable GT option at present.... so i am guessing its diesel powered, which means again a full corvette sized ship.

Lets see.

Blame it on the MoD & IN for not releasing orders on time . As you well know PKS has been flagging the issue since ages & the huge cost over runs it results in

So what in it makes it a complex piece of engineering as compared to an AC ? And if it's indeed a complex piece of engineering why was it given to CSL to build since you're clearly implying they lack the necessary experience & expertise.

Besides I would rather CSL specialises in building mega ships than corvettes. Plenty of other shipyards including Pvt ones to take care of this requirement.

CSL is grabbing a lot of orders - and in fairness seems to be a good performing yard.

The concern is that CSL is the only SY which can build bigger ships as you said and also large merchantmen.... will defence order distract them from the civil market?

There was some interesting bits on ASW crafts in CSL presentation, cross-posting here, might know a bit more after the concall on 31st if possible. Full presentation link is posted in Indigenous Industry thread.

CSL is soon going to start the manufacturing of NGMV. Also, we are supposed to get the RFP for NGC very soon. NGMV are around 2000-2500 ton vessels but on the other hand NGC are to have ~3500 ton as their displacement.

Both of this projects paint some similarities along with some difference:

1. According the old RFI, NGMV are supposed to have STAR radar as their primary sensor whereas NGC are supposed to have MFSTAR.

2. NGC are required to have a proper ASW suits coupled with VDS which is lacking in NGMV.

3. Both are to have proper short range SAM system along with Point Defence systems.

4. Both are going to carry 8 Brahmos missiles in VLS as their primary armament.

For me NGMV are like a replacement for Khukri class and Veer class but NGC is looking more like a proper replacement for Talwar and Brahmputra class frigates instead of the Kora class.

So, basically sonars will be European. Most probably towed.
Yes most likely. Downloaded both GRSE & CSL calls, attached below. GRSE will likely launch the 3rd ASW ship by mid-June.

Another major import would have been that of two “major sensors”, likely to be the hull mounted sonar and low frequency variable depth towed array sonar which provides ASW capability to the vessels. CSL had ordered one of these from a European nation while finalizing a contract with another European nation for the other sensor.

Earlier this year, the MoD decided after prolonged discussions that both of these sensors will be made in India. One of the sensors, expected to be the hull mounted sonar, will be supplied by state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for all 16 ships. For the second sensor, four will be supplied by BEL based on a system to be developed by DRDO while the rest will be developed by other Indian industries under the Make in India scheme. This sensor will not be linked to the delivery of these ships as it is under development.
