Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) : News and Updates

I agree. Drones could be the first wave of the assault. We need both asset protection and counterattack types.

The Indian Army needs these things urgently. Drone defense systems with multiple layers must be installed on our critical assets and infantry divisions. At least we should start with inducting quadcopters to drop bombs on terrorists at the J&K border.

We should learn from the Russia-Ukraine war. The advantage of India is that Pakistan doesn't have the depth like Ukraine to operate.
We need an inventories of drones ,155/52 tracked/wheeled howitzers in large numbers, we should shelves the program to induct 155/52 cal towed artillery or bare minimum numbers like 400-600 ATAGS for some areas where no proper rail road network isn't available.

The towed artillery came in to existence few centuries back, but for the first time in history era of towed howitzers is slowly diminishing now only because of drones. In the changed scenario howitzers need mobility & target acquisition. Fortunately Kalyani had come up with a MGS system now & we have a production line for tracked K9 system. We should make use both these, hope idiots in MOD will not sabotage additional K9 orders by quoting recent soko pak agreement of defence collaboration.

I am now really worried about infantry units. They are very susceptible to drones. Anything in the open air near 50 km should include an anti-drone mechanism with a hard kill and a soft kill. The future is IBGs, which should also include an anti-drone jammer and kill mechanism.

Previous test was at 28000ft height & they wanted to test at 34000ft for the next step? We did hear about the 18 hour endurance before. Good to see & hear its finally able to do some job. I would go for 2-3 LSP models used for ISR in tandem with the herons, hope MoD also agree with.

These bigger drones should not be a problem. They are basically propeller planes. For surveillance, these UAVs are fine, but for attack purposes, I doubt they can defeat air defense systems. I seriously doubt this UAV can perform a spin recovery. For drone hunting, we should add a machine gun htt40.

No worries..
DRDO after failing to develop any substantial drone technology and bull**itting with stupid Lakshya and Rustam kind of toys which even grads are developing finally has already got the drone technology from germany. In 3-4 years you will se some real UCAV for deep strike missions or which is capable of deployment at front for combat missions.

Coming to defending against drones, well you should have instinct to thing like an innovative enemy who will use drones to exhaust your air defence and then the actual air raid will come in.

Yes, I agree that we haven't made any progress with UAVs, and I think military officials need to be more clear about what the industry needs to produce. Leaders from the MOD, DRDO, and military should get together to discuss industrial requirements first. If you handed Lakshaya technology to Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey, they would already have a large number of suicide drones.

That's how it is and that's the case with every weapon system what DRDO filter coffee made. Aiyoo German technology kanaa German technology very high technology, very secret technology.

Be it their nuclear program or missile control system. This is why in 2007 - 2011 around 670+ scientists left the country for better future.

Why the Modi govt wants to lighten the DRDO chief’s workloadhttps://www.indiatoday.in/author/pradip-r-sagar

After opening the doors of India’s premier defence research agency DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) to private players, wherein they will operate government assets thus sparing them the need to invest in land, machinery or other support infrastructure, the Union government is now considering bifurcation of the post of DRDO chairman and secretary-research and development in the ministry of defence (MoD).

The DRDO operates with 8,000 scientists and about 50 laboratories and has an annual budget of about Rs 20,000 crore. Traditionally, the DRDO chief has held the post of secretary-R&D in addition to the post of scientific advisor to the defence minister. The Prime minister’s Office (PMO) is spearheading the change, which is aimed at achieving better efficiency and ease of functioning of the DRDO. However, some believe it’s an attempt by the ‘IAS lobby’ to take control of the premier defence research agency and maintain its supremacy in MoD.

“Bifurcating the post of DRDO chairman and secretary-R&D appears to be the need of the hour as the DRDO’s track record of meeting project deadlines has not been up to the mark. With lesser responsibility, the DRDO chairman will be able to devote more time and energy on defence programmes,” said a senior MoD official, adding that the success of any defence project depends on finance, utilisation of manpower and efficient movement of file within the bureaucracy.

In August this year, the Union government appointed scientist Samir V. Kamath as the new DRDO chief. Kamath took over from G. Satheesh Reddy, who was given the responsibility of scientific advisor to the defence minister. The Modi government had bifurcated the two posts in 2015.

The broad impression is that defence scientists are experts in taking technical decisions but not well-versed with financial and other administrative matters, and that this often leads to project delays. Also, DRDO labs have to depend on cadre from the Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Services for financial and administrative tasks.

Another senior MoD official said a bureaucrat holding the post of secretary-R&D can manage administrative and financial tasks better than a scientist. He proposed that DRDO be managed on the lines of other scientific institutions such as ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre).

It is perceived that the reason for a large number of scientists approaching the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) and high courts to challenge their service rules or appointments is their limited understanding of administrative matters. Moreover, by bifurcating the DRDO chief’s post, the government wants to have a holistic approach towards the private sector when it comes to R&D. In the current Union budget, the government has earmarked 25 per cent of R&D funds of MoD for the private industry, start-ups and academia.
The Narendra Modi government has taken several measures to boost indigenous defence manufacturing, through initiatives such as Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, and boost defence exports. MoD has set an ambitious defence exports target of Rs 35,000 crore by 2025.

"The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has expressed its dismay that 20 of 86 “mission mode” projects of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were “declared successful” overlooking the fact that they had not achieved objectives and over ₹1,000 crore was spent on them."
"The Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) took up the project for the development of ALTAS, which was an attempt to revive “Development of Active cum Passive Towed Array Sonar (NAGAN),” which was closed in December of 2021 and “also declared successful by the 32nd Steering Committee through the system had failed to meet the user requirement during trials,” the CAG lamented.

What a disgrace? @randomradio @Rajput Lion
And Some people call DRDO Premier Research Organization....LOL
DRDO is a Joke.
