DRDO Very short-range air-defence system (VSHORADS) : MANPAD Developments

Note. The BDL-Thales JV on startstreak does provide ToT of design to some extent. And Thales has promised minimum 60% local content from the start.

I am not sure about other things, but given that BDL has totally renamed the system, I think the ToT is quite extensive for BDL.

Further Starstreak is also in use in Ukraine. Any results from there?

Not a manpad , but the Rus Vikhr atgm is also a laser beam riding system I heard? it needs manual guidance judging by the cockpit video of Ka-52. BDL showed 2-3 such new items & being a psu will likely get some order. Would prefer VSHORADS myself, more promising system.
If BDL can morph this beam riding tech into a vehicle mounted atgm that is slim like Vikhr (less dia than Nag but longer in length) then it could be put on all the new vehicles where an operator inside can control via hand held mfd.

Let's see if we get some official news like any AoN/RFI for something like this.

For now only BDL has said. They are a DPSU, but they can be said that they are trying to create a positive image for their business.

Apart from that, we have the Hindu Article. Let's see.

And I am waiting for MPDMS too. While VSHORADS will be in the class of mistral, needing a two man crew to operate. MPDMS should be lighter/simpler system in the class of Igla.

Stop right at the start, stop the video, it is below right corner below the LRSAM for navy part. you need full screen , then under video scroll bar you can spot it.

This Igla-S contract is not with the IA, it's with an Indian company for a future tender in which Igla will be one of the participants in line with the new procurement system. DRDO's design will also participate in it. So will European designs.

The IA had purchased some Igla-S during the emergency phase, but that's it.

DRDO conducted two successful flight tests of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile on 28th & 29th Feb 2024 from a ground based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur. These tests were carried out against high speed unmanned aerial targets under different interception scenarios. During all the test flights, the targets were intercepted and destroyed by the missiles, meeting the mission objectives.

VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian Industry Partners. VSHORADAS missile incorporates many novel technologies including miniaturized Reaction Control System (RCS) and integrated avionics which have been successfully proven during the tests. The missile is propelled by a dual thrust solid motor and meant for neutralizing low altitude aerial threats at short ranges. The design of the missile including launcher has been highly optimized to ensure easy portability. The flight test was witnessed by officials of the Indian Army, senior Scientists from various DRDO laboratories and Industry Partners.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, congratulated DRDO, Indian Army and Industry involved in the successful development trials and stated this new missile equipped with modern technologies will give further technological boost to the Armed Forces.

Given how they quote for the banshee drones, I guess they plan for at least 2 hit and destruction, hence 2 tests cited? Normally ARDE make way more empty warhead assy for Vshorads. The last tender was active just till few days ago.
