General News, Questions And Discussions - Indian Navy

If you go to Wikipedia page of Indian Navy Ships you will see the roles of ship like: Guided missile destroyer/frigate. But if you visit the same of Pakistani Navy, you will see: Multi-Role Guided Missile & Air Defence Frigate. So much effort in making everyone believe about their capabilities
Say what you may , from the Coast Guard level of Pakistan Navy a decade ago they're building it up into an entity that we can only disregard at our peril this decade. They're sourcing from all over the world & doing so in whatever meager budget they can afford . I wouldn't dismiss the PN by 2030 like I would it in 2020.

We should keep in mind it's WNC of IN vs PN during any comparison.

Yeah, the build up is definitely commendable. But what meager budget are you talking about? They will get any budget they want.

A country runs and manages it's Armed Forces but this logic cease exist in Pakistan. Their Armed Forces run their country. The government is running everywhere and begging for money on other hand their Armed Forces are reaching their pinnacle.

I meant in comparison to our Naval budget.

To make matters worse the Chinese may be subsidizing them . However there's only so much they can squeeze from their economy as of now . It's a case of diminishing returns.

Pakistan is way too important a tool for USA and China and Europe to let it get militarily irrelevant against India.

Only way for us is to get to outgrown everyone else for next 10 years.

thx for the sharing, i bought the magazine (geopolitics.in)
The conclusion of the paper:
"(...)
Indigenous expertise in submarine construction
India has made huge investments and developed two submarine building lines. The conventional submarines are being built by Mazagon Docks at Mumbai. Initially, it built two SSK Type- 209 submarines with the assistance of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems of Germany and now are building six Scorpene-class with assistance of Naval Group of France.
The nuclear submarines (SSBN) are being constructed by Submarine Building Centre (SBC) along with L&T, DRDO and the Indian Navy. The author is of the view that conventional submarines should continue to be built by Mazagaon Docks and nuclear- powered boats by SBC. This will ensure that the nation will retain the expertise gained in construction of conventional and nuclear submarines which have been set up with huge investments both in development of skilled work force, expertise and infrastructure.

The way ahead
The establishment at New Delhi cannot afford to view the critical deficiency in submarine force levels lightly. There is an urgent need to expedite and revive the long-term submarine building plans under Project-75(I), 76 and the 75A in a timebound manner with approvals and budgetary support. Plans for further additions of SSBNs, after the four boats, may be shelved and the production line diverted for indigenous construction of SSNs.
The status of current submarine force level is alarming and we need to address the threat perceptions expeditiously. Inordinate delay in decision-making would, in addition, cause the submarine building lines to remain idle at the shipyards thereby losing the gained expertise and wastage of huge sums invested towards setting up of the specialised infrastructure."

I do agree with having two submarine lines. One conventional and other nuclear. What I'm more surprised about is the faith which government showed towards L&T for such a strategic project. It really did paid off.

On the topic of Principal Surface Combatants (DDGs and FFGs only) of major naval forces, following will be the numbers around 2030s:

1. PLAN ~ 120
2. USN ~107
3. JMSDF ~ 48
4. SKN ~ 44
5. IN ~ 33 (worst case) / 39 (best case)
6. RuN ~ 25
7. MM ~ 21
8. RN ~ 19
9. MN ~ 15

Incredibly the Italian Navy has more surface combatants than the more expeditionary French & Royal navies. Frankly the latter is living up to the joke Rule Brittania, Brittania rule the waves. Iran wholeheartedly agrees & now they're officially part of the AUCKUS waiting in the wings to join the Quad - for comic relief I suppose. What's your opinion Paddy? @BMD
