Indian Army Artillery Systems : News and Updates

The requirement is above 1200 in numbers , K9 and M777 type howitzers and atleast 500 HIMARIS type rocket launchers if you decently want to defend the border along China and Pakistan.

What is this 200 300 BS!

Probably IA may rethink about towed howitzer induction numbers after Ukrain war. Shoot & scoot and continues movement is the new mantra for survivability and IA never gonna achieve it with higher number of towed artillery. Probably Ukrainian war is the first time in history, howitzers being hunted by indirect fire . It achieved because of drones & enemy relied heavily on almost immobile towed howitzers.

SPH/MGS and the drones illuminating the target is the new norms in artillery warfare.

M46 was used during 1971 and IA is mad about it, then again in 1999 FH77 showed it's scoot and shoot capability which again impressed IA to the core, the reason when talk about artillery every artillery officer talk about only towed, ATAGS & ATHOS is what most in IA understand as modern artillery.

Ukraine war showed clearly showed not just Artillery need to be self propelled but armored, Cheap Chinese DJI Mavic drone & it's clones can see muzzle flashes & a experienced gun crew and locate and bomb it in minutes, Only K9 is the true Artillery system India has in it's inventory.

IA will only react after action by PLAGF, things we saw at LAC since 2020..

It's difficult to bring changes in a structured organization like military,Bose is always right in any military. It took a tonne of toll by US army to adopt M16 as their standard issue rifle before throwing away WW era rifle. More over the so called indigenous weapon lobby will go on mad if IA didn't induct ATAGS.

If not ATAGS than ATHOS, It does not matter which lobby wins the problem will remain the same..

It achieved because of drones & enemy relied heavily on almost immobile towed howitzers.

In India the civilians are more experts in operating drones and Network centric gadgets than the Indian armed forces or intelligence. Kids are using VR and small RC models to simulate dog fight as a fun time.

IAF and IA can only achieve this in next 30 years.

200 has become 100 again

Per this repeat order can not be more than the original order.

When the Army did the trials for Vajras before it placed the order in 2017, it was carried out in deserts and not in high-altitude areas where the howtizer’s systems work differently in rarefied atmosphere and extreme cold.

“When the Ladakh crisis started, we had to rethink our strategy. We put these guns in Ladakh for trials and they performed well surpassing our expectations. And hence, we have decided to go in for more,” a third source said.

Sources explained that the Army is looking for 200 more Vajras but could not have placed a repeat order higher than the original. They added the new order will be for 100 howitzers and a subsequent order could be placed at a later date once the second order is delivered.

Indian Army eyes major firepower upgrade to counter China

1. The army has already operationalised its first Dhanush regiment along the China border, and is now looking at raising a second regiment with 18 guns by March 2023.

2. The army’s overarching artillery capability boost will involve the induction of more 155mm/52-calibre tracked self-propelled K9 Vajra-T guns, additional 155mm/45-calibre Dhanush towed guns, the new 155mm/52-calibre advanced towed artillery gun system (ATAGS) and upgraded guns named Sharang, said one of persons cited above on the eve of Gunners’ Day.

3. Artillery regiments are also on course to induct longer range Pinaka rocket systems, precision ammunition, loitering munition, unmanned aerial vehicles and reconnaissance and observation systems to scale up their capabilities, said a second person monitoring the army’s artillery modernisation.

4. The army is set to initiate the process of buying 100 more K9 Vajra-T guns, manufactured by private sector defence major Larsen & Toubro with technology transfer from South Korean firm Hanwha Techwin (HTW), HT has learnt. Tender can be out any day now.

5. The ATAGS is undergoing final trials and inching closer towards its eventual induction in the army, the people said.

The army order for 150 ATAGS will be split between the lowest and the second lowest bidders in 70:30 ratio.

6. The army already has three Sharang regiments, it’s raising a fourth one, and eventually plans to have 15 such regiments, said a third person. (Meaning 60 units inducted)

7. We are raising six more Pinaka regiments with longer range rockets, up from 36 km to 48 km. Then there are guided extended range rockets that can hit targets 75 km away. This is all indigenous. These new regiments will be equipped electronically and mechanically improved weapon systems capable of firing variety of ammunition over longer ranges.

8. Artillery regiments will also soon begin inducting loitering ammunition ordered through the emergency procurement route last year, and the focus will now be indigenising aerial targeting systems.

Plan is for 200 more Vajras

“We have got the clearance from the Ministry of Defence to order for 100 more Vajras. The Request for Proposal (RFP) will be issued to L&T soon after which the cost negotiations will be carried out. We will fast-track the process and hope to have the deliveries started soon,” a source in the defence and security establishment said.

ThePrint has learnt that there could be another order for 100 more Vajras after the new one is executed and that the Army’s plan is to eventually have 300 of these guns that were initially bought for the deserts.

If requirment is 300, why dont mod placing order for 300 instead of 100?
