People spending less on food, malnutrition concern serious: Report

This is the first time since 1972-73 when consumer expenditure has declined in real terms.

monthly spending of Indians has declined for the first time in four decades, indicating that poverty in India has increased in recent years, the Business Standard has claimed this in a front-page report. It says the average consumer spending in India registered a dip of 3.7 per cent in 2017-18 as compared to the consumer spending in 2011-12.

Quoting experts, the report says the "most worrying" trend is that food consumption in rural India has declined by 10 per cent, "implying worsening malnutrition in the country".

The report is based on the latest consumer expenditure survey - Key Indicators: Household Consumer Expenditure in India-conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

The newspaper claims, "The survey was conducted by the NSO between July 2017 and June 2018. The report, which was approved by a committee of June 19, 2019, has been withheld by the NSO due to its 'adverse' findings, four people aware of the development told this newspaper (Business Standard)."

According to the Business Standard report, the NSO survey had found that in 2011-12, the average amount spent by an Indian was Rs 1,501. But by 2017-18, this amount fell to Rs 1,446.

The dip is glaring in rural India as the consumer spending in villages declined by 8.8 per cent in this period, the report says. In comparison to rural India, urban centres have registered a increase of 2 per cent in consumer spending.

The report says the period in which the NSO carried out its survey was just after the Narendra Modi government's demonetisation decision and the year in which the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was rolled out.

FIRST TIME IN 4 DECADES

The Business Standard reports claims that this is the first time in four decades that consumer spending has declined in real terms.

This is the first time since 1972-73 when consumer expenditure has declined in real terms, the paper quoted Himanshu, associate professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University's Centre for Economic Studies and Planning as saying.

In 1972-73, the decline was due to a global oil crisis. "Before that, in the mid-1960s, consumption fell due to a domestic food crisis," the report said.

SPENDING ON FOOD DECREASING

Quoting the unpublished NSO report, the newspaper said the average monthly spending on food in rural areas in 2017-18 was Rs 580. In 2011-12, the amount was Rs 643, thus indicating a decline of nearly 10 per cent (both amounts are in real terms).

In urban areas, the monthly food spending saw miniscule rise from Rs 943 in 2011-12 to Rs 946 in 2017-18.

"It's a real concern from the point of view welfare of people. A fall in food spending, especially in villages, shows that malnutrition has increased. It would be fair to say poverty must have increased significantly," Abhijit Sen, former Planning Commission member was quoted as saying in the report.

waiting for rich daddy kids to deny it's fake.

So why is Bangladeshi economy growing at 7-8 whilst ours is falling to 4.5 ????
Definitely something to do with economic policies of the government.
3 years since demonetization and 2.5 years since GST , these reforms should have been stabilized by now

Can't say much about demonetization as all the notes apparently made back to RBI, mostly by political influence and loopholes so all that trouble common man went for was again in vain, labour that lost the job that time made back to factories within few months, though real estate is destroyed completely as it was heavily dependent on Black money but GST have closed lot of business permanently, mostly smaller ones due to unnecessary compliances.

They are too small to even collectively make much difference in big numbers but too many people have been affected, some are recovering, some will never, from small entrepreneur they have become job seekers in already stressed market. Thanks to exceptional incompetence of BJP governments in state and center hiring has completely stopped in government sector and 3yr old, 4yr old recruitment is pending. It really talkes a genius to fk up established recruitment system and fortunately for India BJP has an army of genius to derail it completely.

Don't worry about economy though, we have plenty of Hindu-Muslim issues to keep youth distracted and engage them in "cultural activities". Now Ram Mandir is settled it's time to bring Godse into picture, youth not engaged in these cultural activities may end up asking questions, questions that modern Chanakyas will sweat to answer.

Yea as long as the government is able to rake up Hindu-Muslim issues everywhere and buy-off MLA's to win every state government, it's ok even If the growth rate goes to minus. And as long as only a few business houses and Amit Shah's son is growing income, it's ok even if the people are getting poorer. Look at the choice of ministers holding key positions in a majority government. Apparently, we will be a 5 trillion economy with 200 billion defence budget. If we cant make it happen by 2025, it's ok let's keep the people fighting over religion and win the next election. Such a pity!

Indian economy is domestic consumption driven... demonitisation was last nail in coffin. Wages haven't increase nor income & people don't have money even to by food . This joker & his billionaire corporate lackey need to feed to crocks in sunderban. People need a direct stimulus specially poor & it's critical.

Bangladesh's growth will suffer in a few years when it begins to transition from a lower middle income to upper middle income.

In our case, we are suffering from a credit crunch because of crony capitalism under UPA. Another reason is rural wages are stagnant because the economic foundations are ridiculously strong. When the foundations are strong, then inflation is low, which means food income is low. When the economy was collapsing under UPA, farm income growth was over 20%, now it's barely 4%. So the rural folks have no money to spend.

We had demo followed by GST in 2017. The maximum bad effect of GST is seen in second year and this is what we are witnessing. Third year is what will bring cheer to the economy.

Many of you have lost the significance of GST collections of over one lakh crore for November month. This month did not have any major festival and the economy is doing bad. Now imagine if the economy picks up to 7-8% growth rate, what do you think will happen to GST collections? They will be over 1.5 lakh crores every month or even more. Plus this increase after three consecutive low collection months shows some increase in economic activities which will manifest in first quarter of FY 20-21.
