Yes this was discussed during the AAV seminar at the start of the year I think, from where we got to know MR is likely for min 300km range category , was discussed by Dr Tessy Thomas I think. Quite a few building blocks/core tech is about to get tested soon. STAR is also 350mm dia and now they have both the Brahmos 600mm and the crmc 1400 mm boosters available as proven option. So it will be good to stick suitable config article on top and make new missiles. Plus the dual/multi pulse option , air breathing propulsion many options even if manik derivatives take time.
They are working on throttleable solid rocket motors too, along with SFDR tech. What a buffet of options!

Sudarshan was never in production. That project was closed a decade ago.

Good to see R-77 finally getting slotted for replacement by the Astra family (in due course) as our bread and butter BVRAAM. The MICA and METEOR are too expensive to be used liberally and the IAF probably has strict rules of engagement.
During Balakot, IAF pilots didn't fire until they had positive lock on enemy targets while the Pakistanis pretty much sprayed AMRAAMs into thin air so to speak. Local missiles and munitions will make the biggest difference to the IAFs warfighting potential imo.

Since our BrahMos is derived from P-800 Oniks, 800kms range was always going to be achieved. Maybe, we could better it upto 1000kms. Beyond that a new design will be needed.
PS: If surface launched BrahMos now has 800kms range then just imagine what range BrahMos-A will achieve when MKI releases it at a high altitude and Mach 0.9 speed
The baseline R-77 was built purely for export. The RuAF eventually bought the improved R-77-1 version.
Imo, the sooner we get the Astra family into service the better. The R-series of AAMs needs to be replaced in wholesale mode ( and we have a huge inventory of them).
Probably turn them into a SAMAR-II SHORAD system, similar to the US NASAMS.
Needs a better box launcher too. Sticking two pylons to the back of a truck and giving it a new name doesn't cut it, imo. Looks so shabby.
Post-Balakot, I was surprised the IAF bought more R-27s and R-77s, despite facing reliability issues during Vayu Shakti exercises. some years ago.
