What do we have here? A WAG-9HC twin.

On paper this configuration should put out a starting tractive effort of 1020 KN compared to WAG-12B's 705 KN. A dual WAG-9H will also be heavier than the WAG-12B. WAG-12B has been having problems with traction issues. IR was testing WAG-11, wonder what happened to that.

Sure. But India is where China was in 2005. They had nothing then too. Our potential is yet to show.

No doubt that the Chinese are ahead in technology at the moment. But our military tech is not that behind. In fact, there are area like BMD in which we may have the lead.

Our Space tech is also not that behind.

Tbh, in terms of railways we need expressways more than much touted HSR. HSR is nice for showing off to tourists and bragging but the Chinese HSR runs at a loss. Only France, Japan and a few other European countries are using HSR properly. What's common between these countries? High per capita income. For India 200kph trains will be just fine.

Here is the Meerut Metro by Alstom. Another area in which China beats us hands down but we are catching up.

India’s first hydrogen train: RDSO completes performance test of fuel cell and battery

The Research Designs & Standards Organization (RDSO), the R&D body under the Ministry of Railways, announced on LinkedIn on August 29 that it has conducted a crucial performance test of the fuel cell and battery systems for India’s first hydrogen train.

This test, it said, which is aimed at matching the drive cycle simulation for the proposed Jind-Sonipat route, marks the completion of the stationary testing phase for the Driving Motor Coach subassemblies.

The hydrogen train represents a significant milestone in India’s push towards greener and more sustainable rail transport. The successful completion of this performance test is a key step in the train’s development process, ensuring that its fuel cell and battery systems are capable of meeting the operational demands of the Jind-Sonipat section.

Railways to run 35 Hydrogen trains

In a written reply to a Rajya Sabha question last year, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnav provided details about Indian Railways' plans for hydrogen trains. The Railway aims to deploy 35 hydrogen trains under the “Hydrogen for Heritage” initiative, with each train costing approximately Rs 80 crore and ground infrastructure at Rs 70 crore per route for heritage and hill routes.

Additionally, Indian Railways has launched a pilot project to retrofit existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rakes with hydrogen fuel cells. This project, including ground infrastructure, has been awarded at a cost of Rs 111.83 crore and is planned for the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway.

While the initial operational costs of hydrogen fuel trains may be high, they are expected to decrease as more trains are introduced. Hydrogen fuel promises significant environmental benefits, supporting zero-carbon emission goals as a clean energy source.

India Set to Become Global Locomotive Manufacturing Hub with First-Ever Exports from Bihar’s Marhowra Plant

Wabtec Locomotive Private Limited, a joint venture between Indian Railways and Wabtec, is expanding the capabilities of its plant to export locomotives to Africa. For the first time, the plant will manufacture locomotives for export to a global customer.

The plant will supply Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives to global customers. The ES43ACmi is a locomotive featuring a 4,500 HP Evolution Series engine, offering best-in-class fuel efficiency and proven performance in high-temperature environments. The Marhowra plant will begin exporting these locomotives in 2025.

This project is of strategic importance as it positions India as a global locomotive manufacturing hub and aligns with the “Make in India” and “Make for the World” initiatives under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision of the Hon'ble Prime Minister. It will also enable the Marhowra plant to export standard-gauge locomotives globally, expanding the local supplier footprint and fostering long-term job creation, thereby benefiting the Indian economy.

The success of the public-private partnership between the Ministry of Railways and Wabtec has positioned the Marhowra plant as a world-class global manufacturing site, utilizing an extensive local supplier base from across India. To date, around 650 locomotives have been manufactured and added to the Indian Railways locomotive fleet. The Ministry of Railways and Wabtec will continue to collaborate to enhance the plant’s capability and competitiveness, positioning it for sustainable, long-term export production work.

The Marhowra plant, situated on 70 acres in Marhowra, Bihar, was established in 2018 to indigenously manufacture 1,000 state-of-the-art locomotives for Indian Railways. The plant provides employment to about 600 people and has been consistently delivering 100 locomotives annually to Indian Railways. It has also given a significant boost to industrial activities in the state.
