We are way behind the curve and stupid to make overground networks. We simply do not have space to congest already congested roads in old cities. New cities can be planned to have overhead network of metros.
Similarly, what we need to urgently undertake is something as has been undertaken in say China and Russia (Moscow). In Moscow, old buildings were razed and the land from same accumulated into a single parcel and multistoried high rise building constructed with greater open area for more greenery than previously existing in same land, undertaken in a major portion of city. Where it was not possible, they improved the look of the city and provided modernized infrastructure to replace the old.
What is your recommendation, sir ? Underground and elevated metros and no ground rails ?
I am of the opinion of breaking down railway networks as we have them today(except for newer rails like Train-18 and Train-20) and replacing them all by metros. Simply because of the safety record, cleanliness and punctuality of the metros.
Couldn't agree more, sir. In congested, overpopulated countries like ours, old city rejuvenation is more important than building new green field cities. I would say the few amount of rejuvenation activities going aren't that well planned.

The Railway Board has sharply increased electrification target for 2019-20 to 10,319 kilometres. This is a steep 68% higher than the target for 2018-19 of 6,125 km.
The total target of 10,319 km has been distributed among executing agencies Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), (Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), IRCON and RITES.

In 2018, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved a proposal for electrification of balance un-electrified BG routes of Indian Railways (IR) comprising of 108 sections covering 13,675 route kilometres (16,540 track kilometres) at a cost of Rs.12,134.50 crore. This electrification is expected to be completed by 2021-22.
The major trunk routes on IR network have already been electrified and are operational. Considering the requirement for seamless operation of rail traffic across the network, it was felt necessary that the bottlenecks created by the need to change traction are done away with.
The proposed electrification plan, mainly for missing links and last mile connectivity, will increase operational efficiency and enhance line capacity besides improving average speeds of trains.

7 new FOBs to curb deaths on Western Railway line
The railways are not just constructing new foot over bridges (FOBs) at railway stations but also between two railways stations to curb trespassing and deaths on tracks. The Western Railway (WR) has identified seven new locations where FOBs would be constructed between two railway stations.
Sources privy to the information said that the locations were identified and discussed at a meeting last week by the WR authorities. The sources said that the new FOBs would be between the following railway stations – Mahalaxmi-Lower Parel, Matunga Road-Mahim, Bandra-Khar, Vile Parle-Andheri, Jogeshwari-Goregaon, Kandivali-Borivali and Bhayander-Nallasopara.
“These are the mid-sections where FOBs will be built as part of trespass control measures. It is under planning stage and work is yet to begin,” said a WR official on the condition of anonymity. The locations are spots where a number of deaths due to crossing tracks were reported.
Specific details like the width of FOB, cost and precise alignment has not been decided as yet. However, WR officials said that the average width of the FoB would be 4-6 metre and the cost would be around Rs 10 crore.
According to figures collated by the Railway Police in 2018, there have been 1,048 deaths on WR and 1,429 people suffered injuries. Of these 597 people died while crossing railway tracks and 116 were injured for the same reason. The trespassing deaths on rail track contribute to over 65 per cent.
Meanwhile, the WR discussed the progress of 76 FOBs built on their suburban network between Churchgate and Virar which includes these 7 FOBs on the mid-section. WR officials said they have already completed work on 30 FOBs while rest are underway at various stages.

Seems like there is a move towards larger adoption of Train-18 styled trains. Wasn't there a Train-20 to be launched in 2020 ? Anybody got anything new on that ?

Engineless train to replace Rajdhani Express! After the success of Vande Bharat Express, Indian Railways is now looking to manufacture a sleeper version of the engine-less train for long-distance travel.
With the success of the Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express, Indian Railways is now working on a 160 kmph-capable sleeper train set that will cover long distances.

After the success of Vande Bharat Express, Indian Railways is now looking to manufacture a sleeper version of the engine-less train for long-distance travel. This new self-propelled premium train will look to replace Rajdhani Express trains of Indian Railways. The first Rajdhani Express was introduced in 1969, and its swankier replacement is expected to roll out after over 50 years in 2020. The new sleeper variant of Vande Bharat Express or Train 18 will be manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, learns Financial Express Online. “The design work for a Rajdhani Express-style Train 18 is in process. We hope to complete it by year-end and get it finalised by the Railway Board,” an ICF official told Financial Express Online.

Indian Railways took a technological leap with the introduction of state-of-the-art self-propelled Vande Bharat Express, a new train aimed at replacing Shatabdi Express trains and also offering a cost-effective and more eco-friendly alternative to the premium service. Vande Bharat Express is a 16-coach AC Chair car service with Executive and non-Executive coaches. Some of its most prominent features are; automatic doors with sliding footsteps, bullet train-style white exterior, European-style seats, bio-vacuum toilets, aircraft-like LED lighting. personalised reading lights, on-board infotainment etc.
PM Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express service between Delhi and Varanasi in February this year. The train takes 8 hours between the two cities, stopping at Kanpur and Allahabad (Prayagraj) enroute. Financial Express Online has earlier reported that four more such AC chair car Train 18 sets are expected in this financial year.
The move to replace Rajdhani Express trains with more energy efficient train sets that will cut down travel time on the Golden Quadrilateral is a welcome step. Indian Railways aims to upgrade rolling stock, tracks and signalling infrastructure on the Golden Quadrilateral, to allow for movement of trains at 160 kmph speed, and bring down the travel time between major metros to 12 hours.

RPF constable saves couple, children on rail tracks in Delhi, gets killed by approaching train
A 50-year-old constable of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was killed by a Shatabdi Express on Sunday evening while saving a couple and some children from going under the train at the railway tracks near Azadpur railway
station.
According to the police, the incident took place around 9.30pm when constable Jagbir Singh Rana was patrolling the tracks between Adarsh Nagar and Aazadpur railway stations.
“His name will be sent to the President for the bravery award (posthumously),” Arun Kumar, director general, RPF, said.
“As told by witnesses and residents, when he reached signal number seven, he saw a couple arguing on the tracks. Rana spotted a Hoshiarpur Express train approaching the couple. Those who witnessed the incident said Rana ran towards the couple and alerted them. He pushed the man and the woman out of the train’s way and also stepped away from the track. Within a fraction of a second, the train passed by,” an RPF officer, who is not authorised to speak to the media, said.
Meanwhile, three children from the neighbourhood, who had come to dump garbage near the tracks, were standing on another parallel track and were watching the couple fight. “Suddenly, Rana heard a train blow its horn and realised that another train was approaching him and the kids. He shouted at the kids to move away. They managed to step off the tracks but Rana, even as he jumped away, was hit by the train,” the officer said.
Kishan Shah, who lives in one of the hutments near Azadpur railway station, witnessed the incident. “The policeman was thrown up in the air. He fell at least 15 metres away,” Shah said.
Mohammad Naeem, another resident, said, “Many come here to dump garbage. We do not remember seeing them (the couple) here. I saw that the policeman first saved the couple and then ran after the children.”
Deputy commissioner of police (railways) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said they got a call about the accident around 9.45pm. “The initial inquiry revealed that he was run over while trying to save a woman and some children . The train that hit him was the Kalka Shatabdi. His body was preserved for a post-mortem examination and family members were informed,” Gupta said.
On Monday, Rana’s family donated his eyes before taking his body to his village Jatola in Sonepat, for his last rites. Rana had joined RPF in July 1989.
“A wreath-laying ceremony was arranged for Rana, who had won the meritorious services award twice in his 29-year career. One of the awards was given by the minister of state of railways in 2009 and the other by the divisional railway in 2008,” RN Singh, divisional railway manager (Delhi division), said.
Rana, who was posted at RPF’s Adarsh Nagar police station, is survived by his wife and two sons.
Rana’s elder son Rohit Kumar said his family was in shock but were proud that Rana died in the line of duty. “He was sincere about his duty. He successfully saved a woman and three children. His sacrifice will always motivate us,” Kumar, a final year BA student, said.
Rana’s elder brother Rajbir Singh said Rana was the only earning member of his family. “Both his sons are studying. We hope the state administration or the force will help them,” Rajbir said.
