Indian Science and Technology Developments : Updates and Discussions

Researchers at Nano & Soft Matter , Bangalore developed a high-performance anode for next-generation lithium-ion battery . the newly developed high-capacity anode that is extremely stable at high rates, could be a potential alternative to the commercial graphite anode for safe, stable, & rapid-charging next-generation Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with higher storage capacity.

A week after the Department of Science and Technology (DST) announced a 20% increase in fellowship stipend against the researchers' demand of a 60 per cent hike, PhD scholars on Friday participated in a nationwide peaceful protest called by the All India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA), across central universities. According to the revision announced by DST on June 22, a junior research fellow will receive Rs 37,000 monthly, up from Rs 31,000, and a senior research fellow will receive Rs 42,000, up from Rs 35,000. The last revision was made in 2019

Indian Institute of Technology Indore has developed a process to produce green hydrogen gas, in large scale, from PET waste in water. The developed process will provide a simple yet effective way to transform PET waste to produce Green Hydrogen along with the formation of primary constituents of PET, which can further be used for the production of PET .

Low-energy-consuming switchable smart windows developed based on novel architecture for confining liquid crystals . scientists at Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Science, Bengaluru have added a new dimension to this field by introducing double networks which are superimposed on liquid crystals. result is a well-controlled porous hierarchical network that confines the liquid crystal while allowing it to be electrically switched between its direction-dependent states and governing the dynamics through the created virtual surfaces of polymeric and gel nature. Helpful in in realizing the next-generation solution for low-energy consuming privacy windows which are on-demand switchable between high and low haze states with very high spatial resolution achievable by present-day techniques of lithography.

Talks about various research happening in IIT Kanpur . Includes robot that can crawl through gas pipelines to check for leaks and damages, security tags that are safer than QR codes , idea of a coal hyperloop , smartwatches for the visually impaired , a four-legged robo that can help farmers monitor crops for pesticides and a medical robot that can assist in surgeries , research on methanol .

Might inspire people who are aspiring for further studies after engineering degree .

India, under the Department of Energy, will contribute to superconducting research, electromagnets, radio frequency equipment, and other technical components for PIP-II ( Proton Improvement Plan-II Accelerator) , worth USD $140 million . The Proton Improvement Plan-II Accelerator, or PIP-II , is a particle accelerator enhancement being made to the Fermilab accelerator complex. It is expected to power the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) in the USA . The accelerator will be the length of two football fields, and is expected to be completed in 2028.

Thought worth sharing , seeing a project on PDE , that too from a private university

Theoretically, a PDE can operate from subsonic up to a hypersonic flight speed of roughly Mach 5. An ideal PDE design can have a thermodynamic efficiency higher than other designs like turbojets and turbofans because a detonation wave rapidly compresses the mixture and adds heat at constant volume. Consequently, moving parts like compressor spools are not necessarily required in the engine, which could significantly reduce overall weight and cost.
No practical PDE has been put into production yet , but several testbed engines have been built and one was successfully integrated into a low-speed demonstration aircraft by DARPA that flew in sustained PDE powered flight in 2008 .

Professor Thalappil Pradeep from IIT Madras has been honored with the esteemed Eni Award for his groundbreaking research in providing affordable clean water using advanced nanoscale materials.

Since there is a word technology in the name of thread .. Zoho betting big on tech-enabled medical equipment, data centre-focused hardware devices and augmented reality (AR) equipment. Zoho has invested close to $5 million in Voxelgrids, a Bengaluru-based startup, which builds Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners, for a 25 per cent stake. Also invested around Rs 250 crore in five to six firms, including vTitan, a Chennai–based medtech company.

The firm is also in the research phase to explore Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), which are basically integrated circuit devices used for making devices like semiconductor chips.

firm is planning to launch its own Zoho laptop with the OS developed in-house.

Zoho said that the firm is also building its own large language model (LLM)

IIT Bhilai is working towards more efficient and cost-effective solar energy. Their research has shown that the use of ‘reduced graphene oxide (rGO)’ can increase the efficiency of the solar cells made out of layered halide perovskite.

Recent research shows that a crystal structure called 3D halide perovskite has increased the efficiency of solar cells up to 25%. Can be produced in large areas through simple low-temperature processing. But it is vulnerable to moisture. While 2-D layered perovskites are more resistant to moisture but they exhibit low solar cell efficiency.

Russian scientists have asserted their interest in building close quantum technology collaborations with India and China. Russia hopes to present its case at the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit next year .
