Naqeebullah protest moves to Islamabad, demands end to 'Pakhtun genocide'

Hundreds of people from the tribal areas rallied in Islamabad on Thursday, demanding the arrest of suspended SP Rao Anwar who has been accused of killing 27-year-old aspiring model NaqeebullahMehsud in a staged 'encounter' in Karachi.

The protesters had gathered in front of the National Press Club in the capital to demonstrate against the killing. A large banner displayed on a stage set up at the site read, "Justice for Naqeeb Mehsud".

"Stop Pakhtun genocide," read another banner.

Holding portraits of Mehsud, the protesters threatened to hold a sit-in outside the parliament if Anwar is not arrested.

They demanded that a judicial commission headed by the chief justice be formed to investigate extrajudicial killings of Pakhtuns in Karachi and other areas.

The missing persons should be presented before courts and those found to be innocent should be released, they demanded.

The protesters also asked that the imposition of curfews in Fata, especially Waziristan, after any incident should be ended and that landmines should be cleared in various areas of Waziristan.

Pakistan Expresses Concern Over US Authorizing Its military To Take Action Against Safe Havens

Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan has expressed concern over a White House statement saying the US military has been given authority to eliminate militant safe havens in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In an interview with the Urdu service of Voice of America (VOA), the defence minister said he takes the statement “very seriously.”

The White House statement was released in an e-mail late Tuesday that listed President Donald Trump’s foreign policy accomplishments during his first year in office.

“President Trump’s conditions-based South Asia Strategy provides commanders with the authority and resources needed to deny terrorists the safe haven they seek in Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the White House statement read. Reacting to the statement, Khurram Dastgir Khan told VOA, “We want to make it clear to the US that Pakistan is a sovereign country and its sovereignty must be respected.” He added.

“Instead of using these words, which can be interpreted in any way, Pakistan should be consulted,” he said. “Statements like this are taking us away from peace in Afghanistan,” he added.

At a Thursday Pentagon press briefing, Joint Staff Director Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie said the US military doesn’t “contemplate military operations inside Pakistan.”

“Through a variety of measures, we look to gain Pakistani cooperation and assistance as we pursue operations in Afghanistan, but no, we’re not planning to conduct military operations inside Pakistan,” McKenzie said. Pakistan-US relations have deteriorated rapidly.

Last month the Trump administration cut nearly all security aid to Islamabad until the country takes stronger steps to deal with terrorist networks allegedly operating in its territory.

The US has long accused Pakistan of providing safe havens. Pakistan denies the accusation. According to media reports, US officials are also discussing expanded drone strikes in Pakistan.

Since 2004, the US has carried out hundreds of such drone attacks, mostly along the Afghan border in northwest Pakistan. Those attacks had fallen off in recent years.

In his State of the Union address, Trump did not mention Pakistan directly. But he did say he asked Congress to pass legislation to help ensure that US assistance dollars “always serve American interests, and only go to America’s friends.”

After eating up $2.5b, Pakistan to float another $1b Eurobond

ISLAMABAD: After eating up the $2.5 billion it borrowed two months ago by issuing two sovereign bonds, Pakistan wants to float another Eurobond this month to raise around $1 billion amid fast depletion of its foreign currency reserves.

The government raised $1 billion through Sukuk at 5.625% and the rest of the $1.5 billion were generated through 10-year bonds at 6.875 %, which was 455 basis points above the corresponding 10-year US Treasury benchmark rate.

Before borrowing $2.5 billion, Pakistan’s official foreign currency reserves had dipped to $13.6 billion. The country has consumed the entire $2.5 billion sum in just two months. The SBP on Thursday disclosed that during the week ending 26 January the SBP’s reserves decreased by $299 million to $13.234 billion – lower than what Pakistan had before floating the last bonds.

The reserves are inclusive of $6.2 billion that the central bank has temporarily borrowed from the domestic commercial banks.

Chabahar Port lures Afghan traffic away from Karachi

Chabahar Port lures Afghan traffic away from Karachi. Afg pak trade dropped from $2.5 billion in 2016 to $500 million in 2017.

The PBS said Pakistan’s trade deficit surged to an alarming US$15.03 billion in just five months – July to November 2017 – mainly because China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)-related imports increased by 16.48% at US$24.06 billion compared to the same period last year. An official from Pakistan’s finance ministry expressed serious concern about the widening trade deficit and pointed out that if growth remains stagnant, it will be a whopping US$35 billion by the end of fiscal 2017-18.
As a widening trade deficit invariably puts pressure on foreign reserves, Pakistan’s foreign exchange deposits figure is gradually sinking. It is presently estimated at US$14.66 billion, which includes US$2.5 billion worth of sales proceeds from euro and Sukuk bonds. Pakistan needs to pay back $6 billion for foreign debts servicing by the end of June 2018. To make matters worse for the country, the US government announced it was
freezing military aid to Pakistan.

Muhajirs in US launch 'Free Karachi' campaign

WASHINGTON: A group of Muhajirs in the US have launched a 'Free Karachi' campaign to highlight the alleged state-sponsored atrocities against their community in the port city of Pakistan.
Led by a mini-truck, about half a dozen cabs displaying #FreeKarachi banners on Monday took part in the historic Martin Luther parade here to raise awareness on alleged state-sponsored atrocities against Muhajirs and other ethnic communities and minorities in Karachi.

"We want Karachi free from the control of Islamabad. We want Karachi to be free from atrocities of the security forces. We want an immediate end to the human rights violations of the people of Karachi," said Nadeem Nusrat, the US-based former convener of Muhair's mainstream political party, Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) said.

The protesters said they would approach Congressmen, policy makers and even President Donald Trump to raise their issue.

The term 'Muhajir' is used to describe the Urdu-speaking immigrants who left India in 1947 and came to Pakistan. A large chunk of them settled in the Sindh province.

The Pashtuns have been the most formidable of enemies for the Punjabis. Ever since the creation of Pakistan , the Punjabis have been the most formidable foe of the Pashtuns . It's an unstated belief in Pindi and Islamabad that the more turmoil the Pashtuns are in the lesser Pakistan will have to suffer these turbulent people . Hence the setting of one Pasthun against the other . This is an evolving story . We've just reached high noon in this enthralling saga . A lot more will unfold before we see some satisfactory conclusion.

It's a crap
Before soviet invasion of afghanistan, Afghanistan was more literate than Pakistan and such barbarians only came to existence after the cold war hit Afghanistan. Kabul was considered very advanced and developed city just like Tehran. Jallalabad was very civic.
Now we have barbarians all over and the Pashtun population in Pakistan is the residue which they hve to bear.
