Kalvari Class Submarines - Updates & Discussions

A lot has been invested in MDL to grow its Submarine building capability. To let it stop after so much at only 6 submarines will be criminal, idiotic and unfair to IN the most.

Kilos after their MLU had their lives extended to 35 years. So by 2022, we should start seeing them off. And the first two Type209 too will go soon.

All this while, our required force levels based on studies done 2 decades ago based on data available at least a decade ago, we need 24 SSKs.

We should start presenting full fledged white paper on defence, capabilities and threats every 5 years now.

The only logical step now is to simply order more Scorpene submarines. Give a time of 18 months to DRDO to certify their AIP else import another system. Buy Submarine launched SCALP from france and F21. Bang that is everything which Navy wants in P75I , in Scorpene only. At much cheaper prices, quicker too.

Increase the orders of Scorpene to 12 total. All to be built at MDL.

Then either scrap P75I or P76. Follow up only 1, not both. We cannot afford both.

The Kalvaris cannot replace the Kilos.

But sir, those are SSBN, my question was about nuclear attack submarines SSN . Thanks
SSNs are a new class for which design is nearly ready but no decision has been taken regarding who will manufacture them and where. As of now we are still pondering over the final design of these subs.

Someone told me, its AND not OR.
Well i haven't read that anywhere. Even for the slightly bigger 636M variant which China uses, the submarine can carry 18 torpedoes (6 loaded and 12 on weapon racks) or 12 torpedoes (4 loaded and 8 on racks) plus 6 klub missiles (2 loaded and 4 on racks).

For the 877EKM too, the Kilos can fire missiles from their upper two tubes only.

The Akula SSN of ours however can carry that many. But thats huge submarine.

Kilos can launch klub missiles only from their upper two torpedo tubes, at least the ones of China till now. That's why only 6 klubs at most. Not 18.

Ok, I am mistaken. I just spoke with him. Below is what he said.

1. From a quantity of weapons perspective, both are similar, unless there is a VLS involved. He did not reply, when asked if our Kilo has VLS and changed the subject.

2. The Kilos are far more silent than the modern Scorpenes. Their tiling is more efficient, than the tech in the Scorpenes.

3. Endurance of Kilo is slightly better, but, not by that much.

4. The Barracuda tech is going to come into the Kalvari class in Project 75I. Unless, something dramatic happens, the Kalvari (advanced) for Project 75I is give.

5. He mentioned some battery tech improvements.

So, I was mistaken. The Kalvari is going to be the replacement and standard SSK with gradual upgrades for the IN.

So is the current Project 75 going to terminate with just 6 subs? What about the follow on option for 3 more?

What's Barracuda tech? Can you shed some light on that?

I don't think our Kilos have VLS.

1. Will ask him, when I meet him. Though, I think, @vstol Jockey will be better informed of the same.
2. From the Barracuda Shortfin class. The conventional version of the Barracuda class. I doubt, he will tell me anything, even if he knew.
3. No idea. As per my knowledge, we do not have VLS in Kilos.

Kilo and Scorpions do not have VLS. The 75I will have them. Shortfin Barracuada is a candidate with VLS for 75I. Also the tech from nuke Barracuda is supposed to go into SSNs.

What about the N reactor per se? There seems to be mixed news out there. On the one hand, it's said we paid the Russians for tech transfer videos the Kudankulam N reactor deal or in some of those deals. Then there's speculation we might get some tech from the French. Meanwhile, it's also speculated by PKS that we've yet to master the design & construction of a 190 MWt. Which is why the entire project for SSN & Avinash class SSBN is held up.Can you shed some light on this aspect, sir?

Our SSNs are going to be smaller boats. More like Arihant class and will have the same reactor upgraded to about 120MWt. This has already been achieved.

1. How many Kalvari class do you think we will finally get?

2. How many 75I boats do you think we will get?
I do expect atleast three more boats of Kalveri class with AIP as follow on. Followed by 75I boats with AIP and VLS. These boats will be in 3000ton class and considerably bigger.
Even if we induct a new sub every year to rise to 24 DE subs and 16 Nuke subs, we will need to factor in retirement of Shishmar class and Kilo Class in another 5-15 yrs time frame. So the total number of boats we are looking at is about 12 Kalveri class, 12x75I class, another 12xNukes. with 4xArihant class.

But will the power generated be enough for heavy surges while navigating at top speed say 25 - 30 knots or plus?
