After Balakot, IAF plans to equip Mirage 2000 aircraft with long-range Meteor missiles

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force is keenly considering arming the Mirage 2000 aircraft with potent long-range Meteor missiles as the 27 February dogfight highlighted that Indian aircraft were outranged by Pakistan Air Force in aerial combat.

The Indian fighters, armed with R-73 and R-77 air-to-air missiles, could not target the F-16s because they were outranged as the F-16s were fired from a distance of about 45 km from the LoC.

“Rafale armed with Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile Meteor would have been a huge deterrent as no Pakistani aircraft would have dared to come close by at least 100 km,” an official said.

“The Meteor on the Mirage is something which we are keenly looking into. When the upgrade deal was signed with Dassault Aviation for the Mirages, the Meteor was still in the developing phase. And hence this would be a fresh deal. We are looking into the cost-effectiveness and other issues,” a top IAF source told ThePrint.

The Air Force is looking at a combination of BrahMos NG, Israeli Derby, Meteor, indigenous Astra, R-73 and R-77 to gain aerial superiority.

“There is no class of missiles in Pakistan and China that can match the Meteor at this point of time. However, China is investing heavily on indigenous cruise missiles and long-range missiles. Any missile that China will make will eventually get into the hands of Pakistan,” another IAF source said.

The Indian Air Force had the upper hand during the Kargil war because Pakistan did not have a BVR, but India did. However, since then, they have acquired the AMRAAM, which tilted the balance in their favour.

The MBDA told the IAF that it cannot integrate the missile, with a range of over 120 km and a no-escape zone of 60 km, on a Russian platform or the Tejas, which uses Israeli radar.

However, following heavy negotiations between the European firm and the IAF, the MBDA has agreed to reconsider once indigenous AESA radar, manufactured by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is installed on board the Tejas Mark 1A or Mark II.

Is their any truth to above news? Can meteor be integrated to mirages 2k? Can rdy2 radar exploit full advantage of meteor?

1) RDY3 has a 100-120km range. Meteor full range is classified (>>100km), but the No Escape Range is said to be 60km... It is congruous.
2) The Meteor is longer than MICA. It's not easy to integrate it 2+2 on the sides of the frame. Except if a new pylon is developped... or if the Meteor is embark by two on a double pylon under the frame (with the collateral dammage to remove the central belly tank), or under the wings like previous SUPER 530 F/D missile (but no external tanks !).

So it's probably possible.

What was on the upgrade plan ? New weapons, sensors ? Any details ?

Just during the balakote strike, news articles mentioned only 9 upgraded mirages and 9 th one got into crash...

Something like that.. I also wondered for the strike un upgraded mirages also flew along..

Seems news articles bit over exaggerated..

Russia offers India more Mig-29UPG fighter jets at throw away price

According to the latest media report, Russia has offered India more air frames of Mig-29 which with upgraded UPG Upgrade package will cost less than $40 Million a unit to bulk up fleet force due to the shortage of fighter jets because of delays in modernization and series of the retirement of older jets. Previous media reports had put the fleet offered at 21 air frames which were inspected by the IAF team which had visited Russia.

But as per latest media report, Russia has offered India, 34 Mig-29UPG which also includes 21 bare borne air frames which were never flown and 13 Mig-29SMT which are barely 10 years old and were manufactured in 2008. Russia has offered to upgrade all 34 Mig-29s with new engines and new radars as per current upgraded Mig-29UPG operated by Indian Air Force.

India currently has three squadrons of MiG-29 — a twin-engine single-seat air superiority fighter aircraft. One squadron comprises 18 aircraft. These aircraft are currently being upgraded in-house by the IAF.

The MiG-29 aircraft is currently going through structural as well as overall avionics upgrade, besides getting a new weapons package.

With the new air-to-air refuelling feature, an upgraded MiG-29 can cover larger distances compared to the previous legacy aircraft, something the IAF is keen on, keeping in mind the possibility of a two-front war scenario.

The upgraded MiG-29s have all the latest features, including a glass cockpit with digital screens.

The upgraded aircraft can also do air-to-ground, air-to-air and even anti-shipping operations, with the removal of several restrictions of the legacy aircraft.

IAF is also procuring 18 additional Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet in kit form from Russian manufactures to be assembled at India by HAL. IAF is also keen to upgrade Air-to-Air missiles inventory of the Su-30MKI with new upgraded next Generation of weapons with latest Russian, European, and Indian Aerial weapons.

an average AESA radar against a nice mecanical radar.... not sure that the first one will be the winner in combat.
China made huge progress, but i don't think they reached the US level in AESA....
