Nirbhay Family of Subsonic Cruise Missiles : News and Discussions

The launcher has 2 more missiles loaded. Dummy missiles?

The engine was almost flawless itself ie working condition wise. The failed test where th missile fell off in the sea, there was a problem with the liner so the engine ignition did not start hence right after booster burnout the article fell down in the sea. Some defect which for the QT batch was not spotted, had that been the acceptance testing sample it would have been spotted and sent for fixing/rejected. From the video today its quite clear to imagine what had happened in that failed test case, you can construct the days event bit by bit easily.

LRLACM arde order for the pcb assy which Ameya precision engg got order for is also set to be completed by April 2024. Its probably already delivered as dev orders are completed much ahead of time 1-2 months at least. So overall there is good progress.

Another urgent development of a stealth cruise missile like Storm Shadow/Scalp is required. I hope DRDO is working seriously on this.

Brahmos is the most expensive cruise missile. We should be able to make 2-3 LRLACM at the cost of one brahmos.
It was antiship which due to its ability , our forces adopted to land attack/multi use precision strike version. Now while this is practical approach ie more mission-centric where the success of mission is paramount compared to saturation strike, cruise missile like this can still not provide the large punch that a BM delivers to a much longer range.

As it is already said, anything that flies over 500km goes straight under SFC garb with nuke tag which is kinda irritating if you are a theater level commander as options are severely restricted. Only recently, like in last 2 decades , did the armed forces started to seriously consider a subsonic payload delivery option. Various reasons for that, chiefly being almost certainly GPS being blocked and lack of anything substantial enabling tech (like TERCOM, waypoint nav, algo writing, mission command structure etc even ignoring the engine) that would enable high success rate mission rate. Plus the Govt always had very defensive mindset with weapons which still persists somewhat imo.

Our warfare will never mirror to what the big powers do, or how very high tech war fighting is done in other battlefields. It will be mission specific , smaller scale mostly.

I'm really getting tired of this useless celebration of tests without anything to show for. It's been 3-4 years of ITCM testing and development. What's the point of this if you can't produce usable products from it? After what 15 years of development its still a technology demonstrator.

Where are LRLACM, ALCM, or SLCM? I bet none of these will go into bulk production this decade.
Per BDL production opportunity not before FY 2027-28 , that is if the project is not closed due to not meeting deadline (by June 2025).

Few days ago there was news of DRDO given approval for our desi Storm Shadow equivalent:

Not sure what ground launched uav is ADE making, per neutron they also call nirbhay as uav too sometimes. ITCM is to be delivered to ITR in multiple trucks along with GTRE team and STFE for trial activities again. So plenty of things are planned I guess since this is mission mode project.

DRDO Conducts Maiden Flight Test ofLong Range Land Attack Cruise Missile

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the Maiden Flight Test of Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha on November 12, 2024 from a mobile articulated launcher. During the test, all subsystems performed as per expectation and met the primary mission objectives. The missile performance was monitored by several range sensors like Radar, Electro Optical Tracking System (EOTS) and telemetry deployed by ITR at different locations to ensure complete coverage of the flight path. The missile followed the desired path using way point navigation and demonstrated its capability to perform various manoeuvres while flying at various altitudes and speeds.

The missile is also equipped with advanced avionics and software to ensure better and reliable performance. LRLACM has been developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru along with contribution from other DRDO laboratories and Indian industries. M/s BDL, Hyderabad and M/s BEL, Bengaluru are the two Development-Cum-Production-Partners (DcPPs) for LRLACM and they are engaged in the missile development and integration. The test was witnessed by senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories along with the representatives from Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Army, the users of the system.

LRLACM is a DAC approved, AoN sanctioned, Mission Mode Project and it is configured to launch from ground using mobile articulated launcher and also from frontline ships using universal vertical launch module system.Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh complimented DRDO, Armed Forces, and Industry on the successful Maiden Flight Test of LRLACM and said that the test paves the way for future indigenous cruise missile development programmes.Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO congratulated the entire team of DRDO on the successful maiden launch of Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile.

Well no need to change from the frozen config. That time the motor did not ignite hence after booster burnout it dropped in the sea close to shore. Must have been recovered back then. Both tests since worked flawlessly. Notice there are 2 more there, 1 is a dummy prob, other gets fired. They hired 8-10 trucks for this mission along with GTRE stfe team.

If one looks closely at the launch video of ITCM. The name Nirbhay was written on the missiles and it was also using the same launcher as OG Nirbhay and now the LRLACM is also using the same launcher.

See, RD&E can only afford to maintain one launcher during project phase. All expenses are from project fund only and launcher is their scope hence the expenses and manpower are too. They deliver to ADE. ADE in turn is responsible for you know what. STFE and its delivery to ADE is GTRE scope. Full trial mission under ADE scope. In the end all labs face the auditors and CAG hehe.
