Shivalik-class & Nilgiri-class (Project 17 A/B) Frigates : Discussions

Though I am not very accustomed to sizes but the ship seems pretty huge ? Frigates are how big normally? I mean when that video started it was almost at halfway and it kept sliding for quite a while to reach end.

The vessel is being launched with an approximate launch weight of 3510 Tons (from newspaper reports today)
Expected delivery by August 2025.
Officials said that the indigenously designed ‘Taragiri’ will have state-of-the-art weapons, sensors, an advanced action information system, an integrated platform management system, world class modular living spaces, sophisticated power distribution system and a host of other advanced features. “It will be fitted with a supersonic surface-to-surface missile system and the ship’s air defence capability is designed to counter the threat of enemy aircraft and anti-ship cruise missiles will revolve around the vertical launch and long range surface to air missile system,” they said.

India’s MDL Launches 5th Nilgiri-Class P17A Frigate

(…) Seven P17A Frigates are under various stages of construction at MDL and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). Taragiri which was launched today is the 5th frigate built by GRSE. It is named after the mountain range in the state of Uttarakhand. The 4th ship-in-class was launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) in Kolkata in July this year. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) laid the keel of the 7th and final ship in late June 2022. (…)

[This ship has been built using Integrated construction methodology which involves hull blocks construction in different geographical locations and integration/erection on Slipway at MDL. The keel of Taragiri was laid on 10 Sep 2020 and the ship is expected to be delivered by August 2025.

The frigates are built with extensive use of low-observability technologies, including new radar-absorbing coatings, composite materials and “faceted” shape superstructures.

The ship will be fitted with a 76mm main gun, two 30 mm AK-630M anti-aircraft artillery systems, two torpedo tubes, launchers for eight BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and 32 Barak-8 surface to air missiles. Its main radar will be the MF-STAR by IAI.

NGD will cost ~$1.2 billion each and repeat orders for P17A will cost ~$1billion.

I'm sure this has been pointed out already, but aren't these new Nilgiri "frigates" a bit under equipped for their size? They are nearly 7k tons which is basically destroyer size. Most ships of comparable tonnage are better equipped VLS wise. The closest equivalent appears to be the FREMM, which also feels under-gunned for it's displacement. Type 54 and admiral gorshkov frigates do more with less tonnage. The various Japanese destroyers of similar size are also heavily saturated with VLS cells. Is this intentional? is the IN waiting for the brahmos-ng or nirbhay?

Frigate level firepower, destroyer level endurance, hence the big size. A lot of space is taken up by the RBU-6000 as well.

Japanese ships are giants.

Our man wants to further increase his company's stock prices. Take salt as needed. Right now NGD is the next big program.

The IN has to pay for 2 sub and 1 LHD programs and a carrier this decade, alongside the NGD and corvettes. It's unlikely for the IN to begin new frigates anytime this decade.

The IN has a sanctioned strength of 24 frigates and the current contracts will give them 23. Originally, NGF was planned, but IN chose 4 more Talwars to save money and time. The earliest replacement is 2040s, when the Brahmaputras and old Talwars are retired. So it makes sense a new frigate program will only begin in the 2030s instead of in just 3-4 years.

Otoh, the IN needs 5 new destroyers to get to 15, hence the need for NGD. So the NGF can become part of a much bigger expansion of the navy after 2030.

Is this the Unicorn structure on the ship docked in left, that we were talking about few days ago? Which is Japan might offer/we are developing?

Actually no, that ship is of Royal Thai Navy. It is called Bhumibol Adulyadej-class frigate. It is designed by DSME in South Korea.

This is the UNICORN. It is present on Mogami class frigate of Japanese Navy.

Russia has already delayed the delivery of two Talwar-class stealth frigates for up to six months.

Russia has already delayed the delivery of two Talwar-class stealth frigates for up to six months.

Just a few days back Avadi rolled out more refurbished T-72 tanks.

The article has only 1 correct point, the delays in deliveries of S400. And that's written in just 2 lines.

Rest everything else is more or less false. Written with an agenda.

Large scale tank exercises have been replaced by numerous smaller combined arms exercise. Almost every week a complex Armour exercise happens in some sector. That is unprecedented. This pretty much proves that the T-72 and T-90 availability are good enough.

As for Russian systems taken out in Ukraine, 20+ M777 , Ceaser, Panzer Howitzer of Germany all are facing large number of losses. Does this mean they are of bad quality?

A relatively new image of modernized INS Trishul F43. Few changes which I can notice are:

1. Lynx FCR for Puma FCR.
2. Scanter 6000 for Garpun.
3. SRGM for AK-100.
4. Brahmos for Klub.

The other change I wish for is getting rid of Fregat MEM and MR-90 illuminators with an indigenous X/S band AESA radar and replacing the Shtil Arm Launcher with VL-SRSAM.
