T-90 Bhishma / T-72 Ajeya of Indian Army : News and Discussions

Ukrainian website is grumpy about the 1000hp T-72 tank engine:
The Opex360 journalists seem surprised that this deal received zero international reaction, particularly the fact that it didn't trigger any retaliation sanctions from Western countries.

Moreover, Defense Express would like to emphasize that it's a truly large-scale contract. To illustrate: in early 2024, the London-based think tank IISS estimated in The Military Balance 2024 study that the Russian army had only 1,750 tanks, among them 950 were of the T-72 type in various modifications; meanwhile, the Indian army had 3,740 tanks, including 2,400 T-72s.

The acquisition of engines is associated with an earlier initiated program to restore the entire fleet to "near-zero-hour, zero km state of operational readiness." Such a massive contract for T-72 engines for India will strengthen Russia's tank industry capabilities and capacity to sustain the Russian army in its war of aggression against Ukraine.

This, combined with February 2025 reports about India's interests in buying 3M54 Kalibr anti-ship missiles from Russia, with no response from the West either, evolves into an alarming trend, where the Russian military-industrial complex exploits its cooperation with India as a loophole to revitalize all its segments, strained by the ongoing war and international sanctions regime.

I want the Ukraine war to end but I don't understand where do the Ukrainian media and government get this confidence that things will go there way everytime even when they are offering very less to the west for the support they give.
For very simple reason of common people not being aware of what incentives are given backhanded/under the table by their current Govt.

It's interesting they are more worried about tank engines compared to the AL-31 contract from last year.
Engine deal they have not yet clocked that much because it took a while in between approval to contract signing, and contract was signed with HAL without clear mention of Rus side involvement. The recent tank engine deal is different.

The West is fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian. The agenda is to sacrifice Ukraine to keep Russia occupied, nothing more. Trump derailed that plan 'cause he's not part of that ecosystem.

Zelensky is not fighting for Ukraine, he's fighting for the American deep state for a much greater agenda. And Zelensky has been doing well as far as the agenda is concerned, so the fighting will continue until there's no more fight left.

Basically the American deep state and Chinese are colluding with each other and globalists in both the US and Europe (Bill Gates, George Soros etc) to create a bipolar world, and they intend to weaken other powers in the process, namely Europe, Russia, and India. Other smaller players like Turkey are targets too.

So India and Turkey stepped in to save Russia's energy industry from collapsing. There's no one to save Europe except right-wing nationalism. And you can imagine how bad things would have been in India had Congress been in power, basically the stooges of the globalists and deep state. Modi went though two regime change events and a third one got killed recently 'cause Trump was elected and he shut down USAID, which funds gangs, politicians, and regime changes globally.

Trump, Modi, and Putin are allies of convenience against the American deep state and China. So Trump's tearing through the American deep state with Musk and Modi and Putin are watching and laughing from the sidelines as all their enemies get busted. You can imagine why Zelensky has been so upset recently.

Good point. HAL's deal with Russia is led internally. We bought Klubs for submarines recently too though.

I think the tank bothers them more because IA plans on selling the remaining 1400 in the future.

IA would convert those with T-90 turret instead and/or maybe other plan too. Very uncharacteristic of IA to let go of its gear on hand with no other immediate tank procurement on the horizon. NGMBT/AFV projects are yet to take proper shape. Vikram VT-21 and LWT are the most advanced stages for now but none would replace some MBT tbh.

I'm not sure about the T-90 turret upgrade, but Ukraine doesn't have much to worry right away.

The IA needs 62 regiments, that's roughly around 3700 tanks. The goal is to have ~1700 T-90s and ~1800 FRCV, alongside 242 Arjuns. They will get all the T-90s and Arjuns they need by the end of the decade. And with 1000 T-72s upgraded, the remaining space available is for ~800 new tanks in the short term. So there's room for getting rid of the leftover ~600 T-72s, 'cause it doesn't look like IA plans to store this batch.

The leftover T-72s can only be pushed out after 2030.

Under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), on March 20, 2025, accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs) to eight capital acquisition proposals amounting to over Rs 54,000 crore. For the Indian Army, AoN for procurement of 1350 HP Engine was accorded to upgrade the present 1000 HP Engine for the T-90 Tanks. This will enhance the battlefield mobility of these tanks especially in high-altitude area by increasing the power to weight ratio.

I can't find any Russian engine with 1350hp for the T-90. The closest one is the V-96 with 1250hp.

maybe cummins engine again and possibly would fit in the arjuns also ? Not sure on the status of the 124 on order batch MTU engines since the light tank issue,

That is a jugaad IA is trying and being under test obviously. Now up to them how seriously they should take it. Could happen en mass or get rejected.

It will be interesting if they do go for it. They could export it too, combined with whatever APS is chosen for the T-90.
