Ukraine - Russia Conflict

Russia fails to test its latest SATAN 2 missile

Following the surprise announcement that US President Joe Biden was coming to Kiev, Russia announced a test of its latest intercontinental Sarmat missile, also called "Satan II".

A series of announcements with renewed tension between Russia and the West

Since the latest announcements of Western equipment shipments to Ukraine (light tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and heavy tanks), Russia has made no secret of its desire to flex its muscles against the West. Joe Biden's surprise visit to Ukraine was therefore perceived as an additional affront, even though Moscow had been warned of the visit by the White House.

In response, Russia wanted to carry out an additional test firing of its latest intercontinental Sarmat missile at the same time as the US President was making his address. The RS-28 Sarmat, nicknamed Satan 2, has been in development since 2009 and was first fired in April 2022. It should eventually replace the R-36 in service since the 1960s.

According to the news channel CNN, anonymous sources have however claimed that the last test of this missile had failed during the week, this information was not confirmed or denied by the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday 22 February. The absence of official communication suggests that the test was indeed a failure.

A missile that makes the spine chill

Vladimir Putin promised the entry into service in 2023 of this new intercontinental ballistic missile in the triad of Russian nuclear deterrence forces, a system he described as "capable of thwarting all anti-aircraft systems in the world", adding that "those who would threaten Russia should think twice".

The Satan-2 is an extraordinary missile with a height of 35 metres and a weight of up to 208 tonnes, capable of carrying 10 nuclear warheads that can strike up to 18,000 km away. The Sarmat, despite Russian rhetoric, does not really represent a power upgrade but helps maintain the credibility of Russia's nuclear deterrent."

Way below the market price though. Russia has to sell for peanuts.
