Old painting of "Thagg gang" operating. The men are distracting the attention of a rich traveller by showing him something in the sky. while another gang member is approaching him to strangle him .
Never read or heard about thuggies in Pakistan. But now that you're insisting on it with evidence too, we'd take your word for it. In retrospect, it does make sense.View attachment 3577

meh, I like home theater setup..you will miss cinematic experience.
In our old culture "Thaggi" and "Nauserbaazxi" were arts of tricking people and cheating them with complex techniques to get their money and valuables... Violence was not involved and Thugs worked in small groups . The Thug master used to be their teracher and clan leader.. Rival Thug clans did fight each other for territory, same as gang wars.

A picture taken in our part of the world by a British in 1865..
The two men at the front are the Clan laeders of Rival Thug gangs . Both are keeping a watch on each other during photo session as both are wary of each other...
Those pictures are of thugees of Indian origin. From their dress, they appear to be from North / Central India and not from the areas now in Pakistan. Are they sindhi?
The movie has nothing to do with the thugees of Yore. All the film makers have done is cash in on the name. Thugees were never pirates nor did they ever venture on to the seas or command a ship. They certainly weren't rebels or some sort of proto freedom fighters which the movie makes them out to be. It's more of fantasy fiction with just a pinch of facts.Same goes here for thugs and their thaggi....sort of conman.
However there are another thugs, violent and criminal, assassins in India, movie is about those thugs.

For a slightly more genuine & nuanced version, see the Merchant Ivory production of The Deceivers starring the then unknown Pierce Brosnan.
If you look at their attire and headgear closely, you'd know the difference. People from Sindh or KPK or even Pakistani Punjab didn't dress like thatNot necessarily. Sindh and KP region was under influence of many empires through out 1700-1850.

The thugee cults were completely extirpated by the British before the Sepoy Mutiny. I really don't know what those photographers or whoever curated it were thinking.

Thugs were never culled fully. They were rampant in british raj and my grand father had lot of stories to tell about them.
I will watch it for the midriff of katrina Kaif. Tharki as we are. Do you know that English has no word equivalent to THARKI.
In case you haven't noticed, his mental age is less than half his biological age. Put another way, Were you a 10 year, you'd love the movie too.GND seems to have weird choice.....
