Wiser after Balakot, India orders missiles worth $700 million from Russia

India signs USD700 million deal with Russia for 1,000 additional air-to-air missiles

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed deals with Russia worth about USD700 million for an additional 1,000 air-to-air missiles (AAMs) to arm its fleets of MiG and Sukhoi combat aircraft.

Military sources in Moscow and New Delhi told Jane’s on 30 July that the order for the AAMs, which was placed in early July, is for about 300 R-27 (AA-10 ‘Alamo’) infrared-guided (IR) or semi-active radar-guided, medium-to-long-range missiles; 300 R-73E (AA-11 ‘Archer’) IR-guided, short-range missiles; and 400 R-77 (AA-12 ‘Adder’) active radar-guided, medium-range missiles.

The sources said the R-27R1/ER1 and R-27T1/ET1 variants, which are fitted with semi-active and passive infrared seekers, would arm the IAF’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI and upgraded MiG-29M fighters. Moreover, they said that the R-77 and R-73 AAMs would also be carried by the IAF’s MiG-21 ‘Bison’ fighters.

Some of the R-73s might also arm the IAF’s fleet of Mirage 2000H fighters, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Military sources in New Delhi said the missiles were being acquired under the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) 10-I (Intense) provision, which mandates that all three military services stockpile ammunition and stores for 10 days of “intense warfare”.

The AAM procurements are being carried out under the recently enhanced financial powers of the three services, which enable them to make ‘emergency’ materiel purchases of up to INR5 billion (USD72.7 million) each time to maintain prescribed war wastage reserves (WWR)
I told you that we have signed for longer range R-27 with range equal to AMRAAM-D.

I told you that we have signed for longer range R-27 with range equal to AMRAAM-D.
Highly doubtful, IAF will not buy R27, most likely it will be two tranches of the RVV MD (R73 with new seeker) and combination of RVV-SD active seeker, and RVV AE PD (Ramjet) and might test the K77M Aesa which IAF has had its eyes on since the start of its development. I won't be surprised if Astra 2 gets a similar seeker and microcontroller as the K77M.

I had told you that we are getting every missile originally offered with SU-30MKI. R73, R-77, R-27 and R-37.

I will be surprised if we get R37.
We already operate R27ER, there is no chance of R27ET being bought as R77 as it overlaps with the R77 RVV-AE, and both RVV-(AE/PD) will have a better performance envelope than r27ET, also R27ET lacks LOAL, so highly doubtful about the R27.

Edit: There still is possibility of R27EP as an air-to-air anti-radiation missile being brought in to tackle airfracts with high o/p radars.

Are all of our X-31's anti radar? Or are some of them customized for AWACS/Tanker killing role?

60 anti ship/ ground and 90 anti radar. But quite old now..probably shelf life over as purchase was more than a decade old.The anti surface/ ship role would be taken over by 200 air launched brahmos. The anti radar role by the 250 of newer kh31pk with improved range of 160 km compared to older kh31p of 110km which we had.New kh31pk entered production 2012.

IAF loves the R-27. Why wouldn't they buy it?

You are right, IAF does love the r27, but the r27ET. R27 ET and r77 rvv sd have overlap in performance map, while rvvsd has a larger performance map. If IAF orders Rvv sd, then r27et is redundant, thus my doubt.
R27 EP might still come. Actually in testing r27ET and R27t came above the rvv ae we have in stock.

Its the r27ea thats being bought from russia. If they wanted the older models order would have been from ukraine as in 2012.

Whole lot of data being published here about R-27s is grossly wrong. IAF are no fools to order them in large numbers. In last two months, IAF had done exercises recreating scenerios worst than 27th Feb and fine tuned their tactics. Especially within the confined airspace of J&K. We are ready to take down anything that flies anywhere within Pakistan including on the border of Pak-Afghan.
Mark my words. If PAF gets airborne again in a full blown war, they will never be able to land back. Their pilots will need parachutes to get to earth.

Janes reported 300 r27. .EA is latest model with active seeker and 130 km plus range.Should be a good option.

Janes is a very reliable source of Info. But I am sorry to say that they have no data on Russian produced latest Gen R-27s and I won't tell you as it is classified and known only to pilots who will use them. Even I do not know the exact range. But I have been told that it is much much higher. R-77m-1 does 110kms with 190 kgs weight. What do you think a 340kg missile will do? What will be its speed and destructive power? Does it have a combined seeker or just a single seeker? Do Russians still believe in firing two missiles for a single target or a single missile with two different seekers? Were the Israelis first to have dual seekers in a missile or did they copy from Russia?

Very few know that Russians decided to have AESA seeker on its BVRAAMs with frequency agility instead of monopulse seekers. Japanese followed them and now MBDA has signed agreement with Japan to have a GaN based seeker for Meteor. Russians have maintained the lead.
How do you know that R-77M-1 is not K-77M and that R-73E is not K-74M? Think about it. Russia needs to use them in actual combat to know about their potential.
