They thought Russia will conquer Ukraine quickly, so they trained Ukr troops to fight an insurgency. It was totally retarded to believe Ukr will not defend itself.
Had the Europeans agreed to the Minsk agreement and armed Ukraine at the same time, they would have avoided war. Ukraine only needed money for its army, supported by Western aircraft and air defences.
It wasn't that totally retarded I mean Afghans didn't want to fight for their country and to some extent Iraqis were the same. Remember we were told there was a big percentage of Ukrainians that were not necessary pro Russian but didn't hate them either.

Oh hunny to date only one UKR Flanker has been downed by the supposed R37M and that claim came from Russia while the rest they fire keep falling inside Ukraine littering it. R37M's are made for fatso yankee aircraft like AWACS and tankers and have a really hard time hitting fighters especially when the pilot knows it has an inbound. US & Germany/Eu are very slow in giving approval for fighter jets & tanks respectively.

R-37M is forcing Ukrainian pilot to fly low and dive in order to avoid it. You can't gain air superiority if enemy forces you defensive. So in that regard Su-35S combo with R-37M is doing a perfect job. Plus, as I said R-77M is now under serial production. It has 200kms range, dual-pulse solid rocket motor and AESA seeker. Once US/NATO decide to send those F-16s/F-18s to Ukraine, Russians would use R-77M to destroy these US fighters.
