Arihant-class SSBN - News & Discussions

I've read reports that the K4 hasn't yet been fired from the Arihant but all such tests till date have been thru under water pontoons. In that case the only deterrent we have is the K-15. Which isn't much to begin with. It barely threatens Pakistan while China remains out of reach.
All missiles on the nuke subs are mated vd warheads and in ready to use condition. Regarding K4, there is no clear information available for it but as far as I know, it was supposed to be mated to the next three boats.

Offtopic:
Have we ever had a mind control program like CIA MK-ULTRA and Russian's had theirs??

Oh please.. genius.. India has been keeping its missiles de-mated from warheads.. There was not much info about the Nov. 2018 patrol. Also, is there any information that India has mastered ELF communications, and built the necessary safeguards and redundancies.. If the missiles were mated with nuclear warheads, then, it is certainly cause for celebration...
According to whom? The information, you are looking for, is not available in readable form. Only available on need to know and authorized place only and forum/social networks are not the correct place. Thank you.

Underwater test of K-4 ballistic missile from INS Arihant off Vizag coast likely Sunday

BHUBANESWAR: With India turning its focus on anti-ballistic and nuclear-tipped underwater weapon systems, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is reportedly set to conduct a crucial test of intermediate-range submarine-launched ballistic missile K-4 on Sunday.

The indigenously developed most potent missile capable of delivering nuclear warheads at 3500 km away will be test-fired from an underwater platform, most likely INS Arihant submarine, nearly 30 nautical miles off Visakhapatnam coast.

The test assumes significance as the missile has been planned after several failed attempts in the last two years.

Though it was finally ready for trial in November last year, the test had to be deferred following very severe cyclonic storm Bulbul in the Bay of Bengal.

India has already issued notice to airmen (Notam) for regulating the movement of flights during test window.

Though the test window has been cited January 19 to 21 in the Notam, the test will most likely take place on Sunday.

Seafarers have also been alerted accordingly and coastal patrolling intensified prior.

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) official confirmed that the range and missile integration have been completed and the stage is set for the K series missile, but he refused to divulge details about the secrete mission as it has international ramifications.

DRDO scientists are leaving no stone unturned for the success of K-4 trial as it will pave the way for its early induction and boost the development of its long-range sibling K-5, which will have a strike range of 5,000 km.

The highly manoeuvrable missile having an innovative technology of interlacing in three dimensions can also cruise at hypersonic speed.

“The exceptional feature of the underwater missile makes it difficult to be tracked and destroyed by any anti-ballistic missile defence system,” the sources claimed.

India is one among six nations including the US, Russia, France, UK and China that have the capability of firing nuclear-tipped missiles from all three platforms - land, air and undersea.

AFAIK, K4 is already operational.
If the purpose of deterrence is to be relatively transparent about your capabilities, I wonder how does the GoI & affiliated organizations like DRDO go about it and I don't mean just this GoI but all the ones in the past 2-3 decades. This is a classic case of what I mean.

We've been claiming forever that our BMD is ready to be deployed after claiming forever that we will be launching R&D into state of the art BMD systems .Yet when these systems are almost ready / on the verge of being deployed, we've absolutely no news of it or confirmation.

Precisely same problem with the K4. We've conflicting reports on it's development & deployment depending on which source you choose to believe.

Is this how we choose to understand deterrence? I'm half waiting for you to come up with the argument that those external forces interested in these developments are already aware of what they need to know. In which case, I wonder what's the secrecy all about?

I wonder what's the secrecy all about?

Diplomatic and political compulsion. Enemy forces need to know about strategic systems, their media and accompanying baggage do not need to know until GoI is comfortable revealing it. And this requires quite a decent diplomatic push amongst all countries, especially the ones that are in range of said weapons system.

Otherwise the media will have a field day making up stories and the diplomats are going to have a busy day explaining rumours to the insiders. Furthermore, enemy force media will also make up stories in order to impact decision. For example, Pakistan's attempts to make IOR nuclear submarine free or BMD free. Why give them ammunition before all stakeholders and friends of stakeholders are on the same page?

Too bad there's still no pics of the test - and I doubt they'll ever release any.

Wish it got the attention the ASAT vehicle did.
