Corvettes of Indian Navy : News and Discussions

An attempt for quick induction of Mine Countermeasures Vessels program has hit a roadblock.

Russia had offered to supply a small number (I believe it to be 2) of fully equipped MCMVs within 18 months of signing the deal, and another small batch (again I think 2) of completed hulls to be fitted out at GSL and be delivered in 36 months. And rest (4-8) to be built fully at GSL.

But the equipment IN wanted is to be sourced from firms like Atlas Electronik and Thales, who due to sanctions on Russia cannot deliver the required equipment to Russia.

Therefore the whole idea of accelerated deliveries has hit a roadblock. Back to square 1 with atleast 2 intersted players. Russia and SK.

Can't we take possession of those items & have them fitted on in our shipyards under our & Russian supervision ?

I do not have any idea about the Russian demand for the cost of being a partner to GSL in this. But if the G2G route was atleast tried, makes me think it should be less than what the South Koreans wanted. But if Russia is giving a discount, it will want some work for its shipyards too.

The Yard also commenced the construction of the Advanced Missile Vessel Project (Teg class Frigate?) during the pandemic. Execution of this project is expected to yield a Value of Production close to Rs. 3000 Cr by 2022.

As regards the New Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) Project of the Navy is concerned, though the formal announcement of the Shipyard is yet to be announced by the Navy, apparently GSL has emerged as the overall least bidder.

IN or GSL do not need a foreign collaboration or design for NGMV program. Warship design is mature enough in our country at this stage.

At the very least, NGMV design can be simply a copy of ASW-SWC, where the ASW mortar system is replaced by Brahmos VLS. A mast with Terma radar and Lynx U2 FCS. We can go bigger ofcourse, so its going to be very exciting when the design is finally revealed.

PS: ASW-SWC will take names from the Mahe class Minesweepers.

Point well taken. But isn't GSL in talks with a Russian shipyard for this project specifically.

Such a design would rather fit the definition of a missile boat. NGMVs are supposed to be much larger than ASW-SWCs, comparable to existing Kora class.
