Milliardenauftrag für Airbus: Bundeswehr bestellt 33 Eurofighter

Billions order for Airbus: Bundeswehr orders 33 Eurofighters
The German Federal Armed Forces want to order jet fighters worth billions of Euros at Airbus, as the Federal Ministry of Defense has decided. The BR learned from government circles. A business from which the locations in Augsburg and Manching profit.

Millions of heavy order for Airbus in Manching: As the Bavarian radio has learned from government circles, ordered the German Armed Forces at Airbus 33 fighter jets. This would secure approximately 5,000 jobs for many years at the Manching site, confirms Airbus Works Council Chairman Thomas Pretzl.

The Ingolstadt member of parliament Reinhard Brandl (CSU), who is also on the defense committee, welcomes the decision of the ministry "very much" to replace the old Eurofighter by the latest generation aircraft. "This is more economical than an extension of service life, which gives the Bundeswehr a Eurofighter fleet with uniform capabilities, which also simplifies operations and logistics."

Total order worth 3.3 billion euros
The Ministry of Defense's order will include 33 Eurofighters. The new aircraft will replace 33 old Eurofighters of the first generation from the first tranche. Insiders estimate the value of a new Eurofighter to be around 100 million euros. The total order thus has a value of around 3.3 billion euros.

Part of the production and then maintenance will take place at the Airbus site in Manching. The Airbus location Augsburg also benefits. Components for the Eurofighter are manufactured in several European countries and then assembled in Manching, Upper Bavaria. This is where the development departments sit.

Order comes just in time
Currently, production at Airbus in Manching is underutilized because the Eurofighters from previous tranches are finished. The last three Eurofighters from the so-called tranche 3A will be delivered by Airbus this year. As a result, the new mission of the Department of Defense is just in time to ensure follow-up employment, according to Airbus Works Council Chairman Thomas Pretzl. The Eurofighter production alone employs about 2,500 Airbus employees in Manching. They had not been used to capacity in recent months and were partly occupied with the maintenance of aircraft.

Even bigger order possibly in prospect
Airbus is currently hoping for yet another, even larger order, according to Airbus Works Council Chairman Thomas Pretzl. The conversation is that even the outdated tornadoes of the Bundeswehr could be replaced by Eurofighter. Their number is 90. "Here a lot of engineering work is required, so that then also utilization for our engineers," says Pretzl.

The decision of the Ministry of Defense, whether the 90 obsolete tornadoes to be replaced by new Eurofighter, is still open.

656.... Made by four...

Germany may be a Eurofighter country, but that doesn't mean the Typhoon will actually meet the Tornado's requirements. German AF is not stupid enough to choose Typhoon if the Rafale exceeds the Typhoon and Tornado in strike capabilities.

Is it possible for France to share some of their nukes instead? The ASMP-A will obviously give them a far better strike capability over the B61. If I recall, excess ASMPs are already available. Or France can reintroduce some German specific gravity nukes, it's not going to be very expensive. This will significantly reduce US's hold on the Germans and this works in French favour also.
The ASMP are out of service.
Better to give them some Advanced models. Or built another batch.

They are not out of service, it's just that we prefer to use the ASMP-A because it's better, especially in terms of range, which is one of the best ways to ensure the safety of the aircraft.

But even the old version of the ASMP is so much better than the B-61 that it would be a decisive improvement for the Germans.

A new Pershing II would be an even better improvement. No risk to plane at all.

There is a limited life for a weapon. Same for the nuclear warhead. The two are maybe in storage in case of, but don't give a proper insurance as a "front line weapon".
Even the younger ASMP A will be refurbished soon.

But sure, free fall nuclear bomb is totally outdated.

Tornado replacement deal for Italy is F-35.

Stealth aircraft are not invisible to radar. You reduce the RCS, you don't negate it.
Italy needs an ECR replacement though.

It allow you to fly between the gaps though, and with EW on top they become invisible.

With its big IR trace it will never be invisible.
And à fighter will never be stealth for low band radars...
With EW it will and IR only works at very short range, by which time you're dead anyway.

They don't use the same EW as Rafale.
They use active cancellation, they just don't need to blab to the world about it because they're a real stealth aircraft, unlike that POS you have flying around with it's IFR sticking out.

German pride.

They've already conceded the lead nation role in the SCAF, don't ask them to weaken their negotiating position even more.

Lol how about common sense?

- EF is already in the fleet => more EFs logical choice
- US fighters or EF customization needed for the nuclear obligation

That's why logically only EF and US fighters were evaluated and btw, Germany got the lead in the Euromale and NG MBT programmes, that's why they gave away the fighter programme. And as expected, Spain joined with Airbus Spain as well, which was the initial partner of Germany anyway, for the Tornado/Hornet replacement.

So Germany expanded the fighter deal and created higher orders and additional funding, while gaining control on the drone and MBT programmes. Smartly played!

The problem is that the Typhoon needs mods, whereas the SH is good to go but the Typhoon has politics and jobs in its favour but not costs.

F18 needs customizations for the nuclear role too, but the US will probably make it easier and cheaper than for the EF. My bet remains on a split order for EF P4Es and Growlers, which puts Luftwaffe (if properly supported by the govt) into a unique position capabilitywise.
