Eurofighter Typhoon - Updates and Discussions

Belgium, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey are part of NATO's "nuclear sharing" policy. Germany and Italy fulfill that role with the Tornado, the others with the F-16. The USA have very heavily implied that only the F-35 would be allowed to fulfill this role in the future.

The USA have very heavily implied that only the F-35 would be allowed to fulfill this role in the future.

Not exactly, since F15 and F18 are on offer too, they didn't even ruled out approval to customize the EF for the role, they only said that it would take very long, conviniently longer than Luftwaffe initially planned to operate those Tornados.

Hensoldt Forges Ahead with the Development of Eurofighter Radar

Following the successful acceptance test, Hensoldt has now delivered the second antenna ready for series production to Leonardo UK in Edinburgh. This means that the production of the so-called e-scan antenna can commence at the Hensoldt site in Ulm/Germany according to plan. This paves the way for the delivery of the first radar systems as of mid-2019.

Reunión interministerial sobre el programa ‘Eurofighter’ - Ministerio de Defensa de España

Interministerial meeting on the 'Eurofighter' program

During the past 13th and 14th of December the ministerial meeting of the 'Eurofighter' program was held in Florence, whose presidency corresponded to Italy on this occasion.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of State for Defense, Ángel Olivares, as well as his counterparts from Germany, Italy and a representative from the United Kingdom. Also attending were the executives of the main European defense aviation companies (Airbus D & S, Alenia Air Macchi, BAE Systems and Eurojet) and representatives of the NATO agency NETMA.

The purpose of these regular meetings between Secretaries of State of the nations of the 'Eurofighter' is to give continuity and promote this program so relevant to European Defense. On this occasion, the main topics dealt with were the future of the 'Eurofighter', the evolution of its capabilities, the incorporation of the electronic scanning radar (ESCAN), the relationship with the air combat system of the future (FCAS / NGWS) and the transformation of program management.

During the meeting, the Secretary of State announced the approval by the Council of Ministers of a ceiling on the spending ceiling of the program that will allow it to face up-to-date updates.

There was also talk of the export campaigns, as well as the intentions of the partners to place new aircraft orders during 2019. In this sense, both Spain and Germany announced that next year they will consider the option of ordering more 'Eurofighter' to replace its fleets of F-18 and 'Tornado' respectively.

Written evidence - Ministry of Defence

" Further information on the timetable for the E-Scan radar project. (Q143)

The E-Scan radar project is in the assessment phase and NETMA continues to progress technical and commercial negotiations with Eurofighter.

Whilst these discussions are still ongoing, and the timescales are therefore subject to change, we anticipate MOD Main Gate investment approval in the latter half of 2019. We expect that the new radar will be embodied on 40 Tranche 3 Typhoons."

BriteCloud decoy set for Typhoon integration

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) is introducing the Leonardo BriteCloud expendable active decoy (EAD) into service on its Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 fleet, a Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract notice has revealed.

This follows the introduction to service last year of the 55 mm diameter BriteCloud radio frequency (RF) countermeasures device on the Tornado GR4 to meet an urgent capability requirement (UCR).

Developed by the UK arm of Leonardo Electronics, BriteCloud is a second-generation expendable digital radio frequency memory (DFRM) jammer designed to provide fast jet aircraft with effective 'end game' protection against advanced RF-guided missile threats and/or tracking radars.

Selex engineers at PAS 17 claimed that it could decoy ANY missile for at least 7seconds.

Milliardenauftrag für Airbus: Bundeswehr bestellt 33 Eurofighter

Billions order for Airbus: Bundeswehr orders 33 Eurofighters
The German Federal Armed Forces want to order jet fighters worth billions of Euros at Airbus, as the Federal Ministry of Defense has decided. The BR learned from government circles. A business from which the locations in Augsburg and Manching profit.

Millions of heavy order for Airbus in Manching: As the Bavarian radio has learned from government circles, ordered the German Armed Forces at Airbus 33 fighter jets. This would secure approximately 5,000 jobs for many years at the Manching site, confirms Airbus Works Council Chairman Thomas Pretzl.

The Ingolstadt member of parliament Reinhard Brandl (CSU), who is also on the defense committee, welcomes the decision of the ministry "very much" to replace the old Eurofighter by the latest generation aircraft. "This is more economical than an extension of service life, which gives the Bundeswehr a Eurofighter fleet with uniform capabilities, which also simplifies operations and logistics."

Total order worth 3.3 billion euros
The Ministry of Defense's order will include 33 Eurofighters. The new aircraft will replace 33 old Eurofighters of the first generation from the first tranche. Insiders estimate the value of a new Eurofighter to be around 100 million euros. The total order thus has a value of around 3.3 billion euros.

Part of the production and then maintenance will take place at the Airbus site in Manching. The Airbus location Augsburg also benefits. Components for the Eurofighter are manufactured in several European countries and then assembled in Manching, Upper Bavaria. This is where the development departments sit.

Order comes just in time
Currently, production at Airbus in Manching is underutilized because the Eurofighters from previous tranches are finished. The last three Eurofighters from the so-called tranche 3A will be delivered by Airbus this year. As a result, the new mission of the Department of Defense is just in time to ensure follow-up employment, according to Airbus Works Council Chairman Thomas Pretzl. The Eurofighter production alone employs about 2,500 Airbus employees in Manching. They had not been used to capacity in recent months and were partly occupied with the maintenance of aircraft.

Even bigger order possibly in prospect
Airbus is currently hoping for yet another, even larger order, according to Airbus Works Council Chairman Thomas Pretzl. The conversation is that even the outdated tornadoes of the Bundeswehr could be replaced by Eurofighter. Their number is 90. "Here a lot of engineering work is required, so that then also utilization for our engineers," says Pretzl.

The decision of the Ministry of Defense, whether the 90 obsolete tornadoes to be replaced by new Eurofighter, is still open.
