French Navy upgrade and discussion

Unlikely.

With COVID, I'm sure our carrier and fighter jet plans will be delayed for a bit. Especially given more funds are needed for the IA and IAF for the next few years. The CDS is also against the carrier plan as of now.

Even if we do, we have our own plans, although the French will definitely be consulted along with the Americans.
Any info about the parameters of this PANG carrier???

One would think they will build 2 large flat-tops and also expand CdG's remaining life by 15 more years.
More Aircraft carriers , a couple of more SSNs, maybe a couple of more FREMMs , sounds very good. But everything costs money. Even maintaining enough crew, enough support infrastructure to fully utilise even 2-3 less ships.

Germany has a 6 Type 212s with just ~60 men. Obviously having 10 Type 212 sounds good against Russian resurgence. But a more practical and efficient solution will be to reduce the fleet to 4 submarines, or atleast cancel all planned orders for more and invest in more crews. That way they will actually be able to have more hours on station working.

Even for France we have seen tremendous cuts in FREMM program, 50% cut in Horizon class destroyer program. Operating the naval vessels to its full capabilities is itself very costly.

I would rather have France invest in a single AC , or still better. If it was UK, I would have suggested to co-own 2 America Class LHDs with USN. But France has more independent outlook.

European countries appear to look weak because their priority isn't defence. But due to French territorial interests in the IOR and Pacific, they will need to build a navy that can be competitive with the PLAN in some respects.

The French federal budget is $1.5T. Spending merely 10% of that for defence would be $150B.

All they have to do is increase their spending a little bit to be able to afford a little bit more, and that could very well be an extra carrier. Just 1% extra spending would add $15B every year to their defence budget, enough to fund a carrier every year.

"France should apologize to us instead of confronting Turkey with wrong information. France supported the wrong side in Libya," Cavusoglu said during a news conference in Berlin.

In Toulon we prepare ourselves in case the Turks want a lesson.
