AZAD Engineering has beaten the giants like L&T, Bharat Forge, VEM and Godrej!20 units of Engines will be manufacturedwith spares in 3 phases and toolings with 30 Engines will rebuild for the total amount of Rs 5,10,36,388.

This is most likely for missile purpose , ie NASM MR kind. This was a tender about 4 months ago and at that time Godrej already had a contract for some other turbo engine. Godrej one is probably manik stfe off my mind, could be mistaken though. 20 numbers suggested it was to be used in uav or missiles more likely.

They are a very well known aerospace precision engineering company who had a higher export business due to the less developed aero industry within the country. They are part of supply chain for some of the big global OEMs. Their IPO was quite recent , I think from last December you could subscribe, many of us did. Azad used to make precision parts in some defence projects, in missiles mainly. This is probably the first time they are foraying into a lead integrator role, similar to what Godrej&Boyce, L&T, HAL etc do.

The major problems of the Kaveri engine were the creep, screech & combustion instability. The last 2 problems were being caused by the afterburner. Creep related issues have been worked out with the application of a new Yttria stabilized-cubic zirconia bi-layer thermal barrier coating on the turbine vanes & blades.

Screech & combustion instability issues have also been solved 4-5 years back with the introduction of a V-gutter flame holder afterburner design. I had written about this:

Here v=10.6% is the ventilation co-efficient for the V-gutter flame tube with the splitter plate. That flame holder was found to be the solution to the screeching & combustion instability problems of the afterburners. This is what GTRE had to say about the experiment results:

Previously GTRE had solved the creep problem faced by the blades. With this the only other problem with the current engine has been sorted out.

DRDO reported that this new afterburner provided a stable wet thrust output. The new AB section also provided marginally higher wet thrust at marginally lower SFC.

A new alloy called HAYNES 188 was chosen to improve the service life of the after burner. The tender for manufacturing a few units of the new AB with this new alloy was put out a few months back. Manufacturing will probably take around 2 years.

The last major hurdle before this engine can be out into service is the SFC with afterburners "ON". Even with the new AB section, the engine will give you slightly less than 2 kg/kgf/hr. Most modern engines can do 1.66-1.82 kg/kgf/hr. The new fan section & the SCB will lower the Kaveri's SFC. Still won't be 1.6 though.

There is no official indication of where the afterburning Kaveri is supposed to be used. Maybe the HLFT-42. I hope it is used somewhere.

They did show in one doc about plan to integrate kaveri on a tejas. I posted it somewhere, if that plan goes ahead then it is likely that kaveri is able to give around 80-81kn wet thrust in relatively stable condition imo, given MoD claimed 80kn class engine thrust capability.

Yes, and by the time the Tejas Mk1/1A fleet need a new engine the Kaveri should become fully ready. The timing fits. In the meantime, the dry Kaveri engine production line would be fully established & could be used for producing the full-sized engine.

MoD needs to keep funding the K10 & subsequent prototypes. The leap from the current TET of 1700K to the AMCA engine's 1950-2050K won't happen easily.

Progress has been agonizingly slow. Yet this is a mountain we must climb.
