High speed / Semi-High speed rail projects of Indian Railways

What's the difference ? It's the same old wine in new bottle . The speed's the same. The coaches are LHB too.
Personally speaking, in my personal opinion only. It's fine that that Railway currently is only focused on high speed bullet trains or semi high speed under 8 hours day trains. Because that's where they win from airlines.

Airlines travel will always be adding atleast a couple of extra hours for to and fro from airport, checkin and few hundred extra for the travel, whatever the destination might be in terms of domestic setting in India.

So if there's an option of say a Shatabdi with say 5-6 hours running time. People will go for that. And if we upgrade those sections to high speed, covering the same in 3-4 hours.

Bammm! We have a winning business model.

But if it's a overnight journey, and for similar expenses a person can still complete everything within 4 hours via a flight. The person will opt for it. That's why slowly Rajdhani and Duranto types will start losing significant numbers.

But we still have a very large population. For them who cannot afford , we should be looking to replace present long range journey trains with semi high speed full AC sleeper types. That's the least we can do as a nation.

And if the Railway will be honest, it will say that those section of population is not exactly their priority right now.

Bullet train is being built between Ahmedabad and Mumbai because of 2 reasons , it offers a better solution than airlines for many. And it has enough population capable enough to pay for it. Make it economically viable.

A route from Kolkata to say Varanasi will not be such. But you cannot go out in public and say that we are not building a bullet train here because you cannot pay for it, right?

Sleepers in Semi High speed trains will come. For sure. But the priority right now is DFC, Doubling/Electrification, Bullet Train and replacing shatabdi trains.

When I say Priority, I mean the only thing they are seriously working on.

Check out the video . Lots of interesting points made elaborating on what you've mentioned here .

High Speed Rail Corridors

Presently, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail is the only sanctioned High Speed Rail project in the Country being executed with technical & financial assistance of Government of Japan. The current status of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project is as under:-
  • All Statutory Clearances relating to wildlife, Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and Forest clearance have been obtained.
  • Out of total land requirement of approx. 1396 ha., about 1193 ha. Land has been acquired.
  • The entire project has been divided into 27 Contract packages. At present, 12 packages have been awarded, 3 are under evaluation and Tenders has been invited for 4 packages.
  • Out of total 352 KM length in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli (DNH), civil works in 342 KM length have started.

The anticipated cost increase and timeline can be fully ascertained only after completion of land acquisition and finalisation of all contracts.

Further, the Ministry of Railways (MoR) has decided to undertake survey and prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for seven High Speed Rail Corridors as under:-

  1. Delhi - Varanasi.
  2. Delhi - Amritsar.
  3. Delhi - Ahmedabad.
  4. Mumbai - Nagpur.
  5. Mumbai - Hyderabad.
  6. Chennai - Bangalore - Mysore.
  7. Varanasi – Howrah.

This information was given by the Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronic & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.

Very interesting discussion.

At 27:00 min , S Mani highlights & explains why replacing Rajdhani rakes with Tejas ones instead of opting for a train set is a dated idea with zero value addition. @Ankit Kumar
Maybe in IR too some people realise this. Dec 2021 was to see conversion of both Rajdhani Express Trains in Bengal to convert to Tejas. Nothing has happened so far.

Railways usually release the planned production of number of coaches each year after budget. I don't know if it's released yet or not. That would give us a good perspective.

One of the issues with this massive introduction is that there's little to no news of accompanying infrastructure being ramped up as well which in turn means that these trains optimised to do 160-180 kmph will end up doing 100-120 kmph that too in select routes.

I sincerely hope that the government is not undertaking all this merely for optics. Sudhanshu Mani laid out a full fledged plan about how we could go from 2-400 such trainsets within the next 6-7 yrs by focusing on Train 20 , involving a foreign OEM to work on aluminium profiles for a full up Al construction train in a JV with ICF , involving the Pvt sector for some of these & focussing on tilt mechanism + sleepers to make up 400 & beyond .

Hope the IR , Ministry of Railways & GoI take cognizance of his views. @Ankit Kumar
