High speed / Semi-High speed rail projects of Indian Railways

IR till now is not backing the project, let's see how it goes.
But I thought IR is backing the project . How is the survey being conducted then ? How was a separate company for this railway network established ?

Btw - if IR & by extension the GoI isn't backing the project , they've got a good excuse not to do so now .

State government thinks that once it does the survey , it will be in a better position to get government and foreign lenders on board.

Land acquisition will be a mess there , that's why IR wants to keep away for now. That's why they happily mentioned RRTS everywhere but not silver line.

IR views.
Although Kerala CM has met PM to appeal for the same, and PM has said that he will talk to RM. Let's see.
He's already told Pinarayi to FO without saying as much. The Railway Minister did that for the PM. Sakhavus master plan of minting money by capturing all that land, selling it to the government at a premium & then commercially exploiting the surrounding land has flopped. They should stick to dhonis like Kochi. Alas not much money to be made there.

I have been listening to the claims of Trivendram to Kasargod high speed train line, building of state owned international airports especially for Malayali diaspora in middle East etc but I haven't seen modern infrastructure in last 1 decade despite having better basic infrastructure all along.

As long as the Sakhavus are around, fresh investments will be more of an exception than the rule. That doesn't mean if they go away tomm the system will suddenly change. Such habits as organised extortion, unionizing, low productivity, etc - basically the bane of any industrial economy , once ingrained into a few generations isn't going away fast.

These parasitical elements merely switch hosts once the original host isn't delivering what's expected. A good example is WB. The eco system simply switched to the TMC from the CPM. Tomorrow if the BJP comes to power they would have to accommodate the same eco system in some manner.

Most of the students who graduate move outside of Kerala in search of livelihoods unless they're politically connected or come from business families - small medium or big . New industries aren't coming in any decent numbers, old ones are just about surviving or shutting shop, the Gulf boom will come to an end by the end of this decade or the beginning of the next. The effects are already being seen for the past 6-7 yrs as the intake within the Gulf is decreasing.

Interesting interview of Sudhanshu Mani . Apparently even if we get 400 Train 18 trainsets as of now we don't have more than 2 lines where these can be run for more than 160 kph nor are they any plans on the drawing board to enhance the speed on such lines .

Secondly he suggests we don't make more than 40-50 trainsets with chair cars out of the 100 we've ordered with the rest being of sleeper types as if the journey is more than 8 hrs & there are no sleepers such trainsets wouldn't attract passengers leading to losses defeating the very purpose of these trainsets.

Thirdly he suggests manufacturing of a few of those 400 proposed Vande Bharat Train 18 trainsets be done in Aluminium profile on a trial basis as it's light ,hence can travel at faster speeds apart from being energy efficient . Moreover , this needs to be done as a JV with an international OEM with expertise in this field preferably with ICF Chennai.

Fourthly he suggests that we run the HSR in not more than 2 sections for the purposes of studying this phenomenon as investing in any more would be a waste at this point in time where this money can be better utilized in enhancing & developing the Semi HSR sections across India .

He also advocates going in with another partner apart from Japan for it so that we don't put all our eggs in one basket . This makes sense given that the entire HSR network in China is running in a loss. Further how different is the easy interest terms offered by Japan for such HSR projects different from the Chinese debt trap .

He cites the example of the Lucknow Metro calling it a loss making proposition. There now seems to be a craze for Metros all across states in India which see this as the new status symbol.

Finally he requests the authorities in question to consider the cases of those railway officials who were part of the team which developed the Train 18 & were subsequently persecuted only to be cleared of all charges by the Vigilance Dpt but whose career prospects were severely damaged with their promotions being held up .

Lots of other details in this wonderful interview including the Silver Line of Kerala , DFC , future of railways given it's precarious financial position , the GoI's massive push on infrastructure & transport centred around the railways which seems to place a premium over building infrastructure over profitability etc .

Idiots at state level jeopardizing whole relationship with Japan .

Just for reference, the total loans owned by Srilanka to Japan is more than that combined of India and China. But they aren't making a noise about default.

The only thing they will do is limit the future interaction with Srilankan authorities.

And Japan has a pretty big purse and ready to give investments at very low rates.

It's simple, passenger service doesn't bring in revenues. Goods does. So any extra amount available will go towards augmentation of DFCs atleast for a decade.

India’s first bullet train to be operational in 2027: NHSRCL chairman

NEW DELHI: India’s first bullet train will be operational in 2027 and trials will begin in 2026, National High Speed Rail Corridor (NHSRCL) chairman and managing director Satish Agnihotri said on Tuesday adding that the country’s first bullet train station in Surat will be inaugurated by 2023.

“Though the trial between Surat and Bilimora will be conducted in 2026, we will commence bullet train operations in between these two stations from 2027,” he said adding, “Surat station is expected to be ready for operations by September, 2023.”

The distance between Surat-Bilimora route is 50km.

NHSRCL officials said that the civil work is being done at an escalated speed and four (Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch) of the total 12 stations will be ready by December 2024.

Officials said that apart from the construction of these four stations, a viaduct of 237 km will also be constructed. A viaduct is a specific type of bridge that consists of a series of arches, piers or columns supporting a long-elevated railway or road.

“Our priority is to complete and start the bullet train operations on this route. Maintenance and provision of updated technology is a commitment from Japan,” Japan Ambassador, Satoshi Suzuki told the media in Navsari while talking on India’s bullet train project.

“Our latest technology is the E5 Shinkansen however, we are providing an upgraded version of this technology keeping in mind India’s weather conditions and pollution. The coaches of the bullet train will be antiseismic,” he said.

Construction work of piles, pile caps, open foundations, well foundations, piers, pier caps is in progress at 125 km length, an NHSRCL official said.

In Surat depot, out of 128 foundations, 118 foundations have been completed and in Sabarmati depot- work was awarded on February 4, this year. The passenger terminal hub at Sabarmati integrating high speed rail, metro, bus rapid transit and two railway stations are expected to be completed by August this year.

“For the first bullet train, some train coaches will be shipped as complete coaches while some will be assembled in India, “ Agnihotri said.

“The technology is based on a crash avoidance system which includes the latest signaling and coach designs that make the train accident-free,” he added.

Agnihotri said that one lakh people will be employed when the civil work progresses to its peak, which is expected to reach by June. “The project currently has generated around 20,000 employments,” Agnihotri said.

The project, however, has been facing issues due to issues in land acquisition in Maharashtra. The total length of this route is 508.17km and the maximum operational speed of the bullet train is 320 kmph.

The entire route of Ahmedabad- Mumbai bullet train will have 12 stations- eight in Gujarat and four in Maharashtra. Stations in Maharashtra include Mumbai (BKC), Thane, Virar and Boisar. While 98.7% and 100% land has been acquired in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli respectively, only 68.7% of it has been acquired in Maharashtra.

Assuming the BJP comes to power in both the centre & state , the bullet train project can commence operations by 2029 . 2027 is impossible as the present government in Maharashtra will be in power till the end of 2024 & as long as they're in power neither will the Metro-3 line nor the bullet train project proceed smoothly or on schedule . Both projects will move at snail's pace & eventually beyond a point will cease work .

Yup, I am in Maharashtra and predicted this when Sonia Sena formed their unholy alliance. Found my old post:
