Indian Army Artillery Systems : News and Updates

It says 18km range with conventional M107 rounds. How does this compare to ranges of M198 and MKEK Panter?

Range of panter is exact same with rounds.18km or 40 km with EF-BB.
Panter has better rate of fire 6 rounds to 4 rpm.But it is twice the weight of sharang with 18 tns weight compared to 9 tns. This makes panter more difficult to use in mountain terrain.

M198 is in same (possibly slightly less)range category and same rate of fire. But its even lighter than sharang at 8 tons, making it useful to use in mountain terrain.

Like I specifically replied to this tweet: it is like comparing apples with oranges. One unproven system, needed to be proved. The other, is a proven system participating in an evaluation process.

Please notice how the poster has tried to paint a 'slant' against OFB here. Poor reporting and irresponsible twisting of facts.

It's new. The Athos is a 52cal gun, while Dhanush right now is 45cal. We had planned to buy 1500+ Athos (or whichever gun won), with license production, but now 1200 of those guns will be ATAGS instead. The next batch of Dhanush will be 52cal.

Slant against OFB or inclined towards OFB. Saurav Jha is a staunch swadeshi & isn't the Dhanush manufactured by the OFB?

He is specifically trying to project a 'slant' against OFB, exhibiting as if Army is against it (by the sheer number of trials). That is why, the poor reporting quip.

The simple thing is i personally want
1. Army to have modern 155/52 guns
2. And i want them to have them as much quicker as possible.

The things which make it "not so simple"
1. I do not want the 155/52 category to have 5 different types of guns(upgraded M46, Bofors, Dhanush, ATAGS and ATHOS) , that will be a mess, increasing costs of operations, put pressure on logistics and what not. I would thereby personally want to see around 114 Dhanush 155/45, around 300 Sharang 155/45, 400-500 Dhanush 155/52 and 1500-1800 ATAGS.

2. But the 2nd problem is cost. We don't have enough money. And the thing that the Israeli offer is even cheaper than Dhanush 45. That makes things complicated.

I think OFB here should be boosted (if money it needs then why not) , to increase its production rate of Dhanush and Sharang, while also roping in private industry to cut in the costs.

Meanwhile the ATAGS pre production batch will have enough time to prove itself to the Army across India.

I guess the M46 and Bofors will eventually be replaced over the next 10-15 years. The Dhanush 52 can replace Bofors.

So Dhanush 45/52, Athos and ATAGS in the towed category in the long run.

I don't think we will buy more than 400 Athos anyway, as long as Dhanush 52 actually clears trials.

India to conclude user trials of first locally developed howitzer.

Rahul Bedi, New Delhi
Jane's Defence Weekly, 30 May 2019

The Indian Army (IA) is expected to successfully complete user trials of the 155 mm/52 calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) within the next two months: a move that would pave the way to start series production of India's first locally designed howitzer.

Industry sources told Jane's that two different prototypes of the ATAGS, which was jointly developed by the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private-sector companies Tata Power SED, Bharat Forge and Kalyani Strategic Systems, have been undergoing trials with the IA since 24 May at Pokhran in India's north-western desert region.

They said that once these trials are completed around July, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) will issue a request for proposals to both Tata Power, which provided the 'G1' prototype, and Bharat Forge, which provided the 'G2' prototype, for the supply of 150 guns for the IA for an estimated INR36.65 billion (USD524 million). The MoD's Defence Acquisition Council had approved the ATAGS procurement in August 2018.
Thereafter, one of two howitzer prototypes, either Tata Power's G1 or Bharat Forge's G2, is expected to be shortlisted for procurement based on performance and commercial bids.

Officials said the lowest bidder, or L1, will be awarded a contract to build 100 of the 150 ATAGSs while the runner-up will be allowed to manufacture the remaining 50 guns (of the same model) in what will be India's first-ever public-private partnership (PPP) project in the defence sector.

The ATAGS programme was launched in 2013 by the DRDO's Armament Research & Development Establishment to boost the IA's depreciated artillery profile. In September 2017 the gun set a local record by firing three shells, reportedly undisclosed model high-explosive base bleed (HE-BB) projectiles, to a distance of 47.2 km at Pokhran.

1) Hit a distance of 48.074km in Pokhran field firing range on Saturday.
2) The futuristic and technically superior breech with higher service pressure can withstand upto 560Mpa.
3) ARDE and Kalyani Group jointly developed ordnance, recoil system, gun structure, gun control, automation and battery command post in ATAGS, thus making a gun system project in which any kind of ammunition can be fired.
4) This hydro lateral gun can be deployed in three minutes at night and 2.50 minutes in day.
5) This gun is fitted with automatic ammunition handling system that can fire 5 rounds in 30 seconds.

India’s first fully integrated Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) will be ready for crucial user (army) trials by early September this year, a senior official of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) told TOI on Wednesday.“A team of scientists from Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and army officers from the Corps of Artillery conducted a key user assistant technical trial (UATT) of the gun between May 20 and June 5 at the firing range of Pokhran in Rajasthan.

The gun has achieved all desired results during the trial, which is why we are confident of giving the gun for the army’s trials,” the official added. The gun has achieved critical technical objectives such as accuracy, range, day, night firing and mobility. “We have fired all types of ammunitions. The gun has hit a target at 45km distance. We have tested other technical parameters too,” said another senior official involved in the project.

The army and DRDO have already completed desert and high-altitude trials in Rajasthan and Sikkim in the last two years. “The gun has produced excellent results. Our endeavour is to induct the gun in the force by 2020,” added the official. The ATAGS is the first indigenous 155mm/52-calibre towed gun. It is one of the guns in the world having six-round ‘automated magazine’ that fires in 30 seconds. The gun has all-electric drive, an advantage over traditional hydraulic drives, which are common in other towed guns. The electric drives of the ATAGS provides controls in handling ammunition, opening and closing breech mechanism and ramming the round into firing chamber,” said a scientist involved in the project.

The existing 155/mm and 52 calibre guns have three-round magazines, which need to be reloaded manually. During this exercise maximum burst takes place, which have often resulted in casualties, said defence sources.
