Indian Army Artillery Systems : News and Updates

Ukraine & Russia are both failing to deploy a coherent force. Untill our Army is planning to fight in bits and pieces like them, the towed artillery has immense importance.
With the arrival of FPVs and LMs, the days of massed artillery and armour formations are over. The IA is moving towards IBGs with integrated attack helos for the fluid battlefield of the future. Towed arty will find it difficult to keep up in a mixed formation imho and will be picked off easily unless there is air support.

towed artillery days are numbered..... Mobile western artillery system both tracked & wheeled are doing ok in Ukraine....massed artillery is not going anywhere, only reason Russians have manage to gain ground lately is because of massive artillery barrages & air support on Ukrainian positions.

DEW & AAA can provide cover in future for towed Systems, but that's a big if.

They should build a system like Archer

Until an effective solution to these cheap FPV drones and loitering munitions becomes available, shoot and scoot seems to be the way forward.

Somehow the IA's snail pace of modernization seems to have paid off as they can focus more on SPGs and truck mounted artillery versus towed.

One thing Ukrainian war has shown is that towed artillery are slow & way to vulnerable to counter battery fire & drone attacks in modern warfare where situational awareness levels are off the charts......... Investing on Track Artillery platforms like K 9 is the way forward.... Wheeled Artillery while good are not practical for unpaved roads.

While you can make this argument for plains, the mountains require towed artillery.

We call the immobile versions field guns. Towed guns carry their own motorable engine for scoot and shoot.

In any case the Ukrainians are operating all types of artillery systems; field, towed, SPGs and MGS.

Nice. Gotta get the ball rolling. It's already a decade late.

"BF, L&T, Adani and OFB."

Since there's no mention of Tata, that means ATAGS isn't participating. It is coming in through a separate process. This tender limits weight to 15T.

That would imply BF's Bharat-52, L&T's TRAJAN with the French, Adani's ATHOS with the Israelis and OFB's Dhanush L/52 are competing.

TRAJAN is expensive. It's for rich people, so forget it.

Dhanush L/52 is still under development, and they have an alternate path for its procurement anyway, so it's not gonna win this one. It's neither L1 nor T1 capable anyway.

So the competition is between Bharat-52 and ATHOS. Both are L1/T1 capable.

And the winner will very likely go on to get a contract for 800 more guns.

Lol as expected both foreign maal are participating under iddm, what a fraud.

Screwdrivegiri will easily win the tender due to cost factor.

What more do u expect from corrupt army.

This was always IDDM from the start. It's a mix of Indian and foreign IPs. It was primarily created to help foreign companies transfer their technologies to Indian companies in a significant and structured way or help them develop their replacements. This includes a roadmap for further indigenization and the Indianization of software.

IDDM is just one step above Buy and Make categories. It's designed to make foreign OEMs give up their tech over time or replace their own tech with Indian alternatives.

Make I and II are for Indian-designed products where IP is held by Indian companies. It retains the possibility of foreign collaboration, but it is centered around creating new IP in India.

So, in next 5 years we can expect orders for:
  • 100 K9 repeat
  • 307 ATAGS
  • 400 TAGS
  • 400+ MGS (original requirement of 800)
I really hope they make some space for MaRG 155-BR. It's criminal not to order it when we export these. I don't see any argument against it.

I believe it's gonna be 300 MGS. The remaining could go the TGS way, with follow-on contracts.

I guess the goal will be to upgrade both TGS and MGS incrementally with each batch. So 400 each and 300 each resply.

The K9 seems to be taking that route, with a potential 3rd batch of 100 more.

So 1200 TGS, 800-900 MGS, 300 K9, 145 M777, 414 Dhanush and 300-600 ATAGS. That's 2859 to 3259 guns. We can assume 8 regiments of Garudas will be bought, that's 160 guns. And that still leaves us with 600 to 1000 guns pending orders, which is currently occupied by M-46/Sharangs. We need more ULH and perhaps there's room for up to 300 MaRG as well.
