4 million new jobs created in eight months till April, says CSO report
As many as 41.26 lakh new jobs were created during September 2017-April this year, with the first month of the current fiscal witnessing highest ever monthly addition of 6.85 lakh, says Central Statistics Office.

The CSO had brought out the first release of employment related statistics in the formal sector in April, 2018 covering the period September 2017 to February, 2018, using information on the number of subscribers who have availed benefits under three major schemes, namely - the EPFO, Employees' State Insurance Scheme (ESIC) and National Pension Scheme (NPS).

Now, in the similar data release suggest that as many as 41,26,138 new payrolls were created during September 2017 to April 2018, and in April alone 6,85,841 new payrolls were recorded by the retirement fund body Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

According to the data, the EPFO's April payroll number was the highest in the last eight months, indicating higher jobs creations than preceding 7 month.

During April, the maximum new payrolls of 1,87,221 were recorded in the age bracket of 18 to 21 years followed by 1,80,892 payrolls in 22 to 25 years.

According to the EPFO, the data for most recent months are provisional as updation of employees records is a continuous process and are likely to be updated in subsequent months. For each age-wise band, the estimates are net of the members enrolled and ceased during the month.

It also said the estimates may include temporary employees whose contributions may not be continuous for the entire year. The members' data are linked to unique Aadhaar identity. The body has more than 6 crore active members with at least one month contribution during the year.

The CSO, which is a wing of Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, said the estimated total number of new National Pension Scheme subscribers during the period September, 2017 to April, 2018 is 5,12,040 persons.
The present report gives different perspectives on the levels of employment in the formal sector and does not measure employment at a holistic level, it added.

India's crude steel output up 6% at 26 MT
India's crude steel output grew six per cent to 26 million tonne (MT) in the first quarter of the ongoing financial year, according to official data. The country had produced 24.5 MT of crude steel during April-June, 2017-18, the Joint Plant Committee (JPC) said in its latest report.

The JPC, under Ministry of Steel, collects and maintains data on the domestic iron and steel sector.
"During April-June, crude steel production was 26.08 MT (provisional), a growth of 6.2 per cent over same period of last year," the report said.

State-run SAIL, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), Tata Steel, Essar Steel, JSW Steel and Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) together produced 15.6 MT during the three-month period, registering a growth of 12 per cent over the year-ago period.

During the reported quarter, the output of hot metal was at 17.88 MT as compared to 16.10 MT during the year-ago period, an increase of 11 per cent.

The output of pig iron rose 5 per cent to 2.58 MT from 2.45 MT in April-June of 2017-18.
According to World Steel Organisation (worldsteel), India outstripped Japan to become the second largest steel producer as its steel output grew 3.43 per cent to 8.43 MT in February against 8.29 MT of the latter.
India has set a target of producing 300 MT crude steel by 2030 with an investment of Rs 10 lakh crore.

Apple iPhone may get cheaper as govt confirms local manufacturing of select models in India
Technology major Apple has started making certain models of iPhone in Bengaluru through a contract manufacturer, Parliament was informed today. “While Apple has already started manufacturing of certain models of iPhone in Bengaluru through a contract manufacturer, details of private business decisions are not maintained by the Centre,” Minister of State for Commerce and Industry C R Chaudhary said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

The government has received representations seeking concessions including duty exemption on manufacturing and repair units, components, capital equipment and consumables for smartphone manufacturing, which have not been accepted, he said.

In a separate reply, the minister said as on July 15, 16,324 applications have been received of which 11,129 have been recognised as startups.

China is still not at Western levels yet. And India is still too poor to compete, but we are getting there.

But the electronics industry will go nowhere without extensive govt support. There is right now a plan for two semiconductor fabs in India, one for Silicon and another for GaN, so let's see where that takes us. High end electronics is part of the "Make in India 2.0" program.
