Kashmir : Counter Terror Operation Updates and Discussions

No they are not. It just for better headline in Newyork times and Washington post. Just like "Free Syrian Army" made better headline than any of the following names. Its information war, not an ideological change. FSA after 2013 is mainly a rebrading of mainly following islamist organizations + Islamist from Lebanon, Egypt, Caucasus , China & south east Asia. But just look how effective it was for information warfare when they have willing partners in Liberal leftist media. Even encounters with Al-Nusra is reported as Assad army vs FSA

Jaish al-Izzah
Jaysh al-Nasr
Jaish al-Tahrir
al-Mu'tasim Brigade
Sultan Murad Division
Al-Tawhid Brigade
Jabhat al-Akrad
al-Rahman Legion

While a name like "The Liberation Front" will make decent headlines, but that's the limit. It won't change anything in reality since they will be treated the same way even after the name change. It's their acts that make them a terrorist organisation, not their name. Rather that name will make them much more memorable and easy to talk about globally, and every child and his dog will remember such a name, which is actually not good for the TRF's reputation. The FSA and SDF were allied with Western interests, so it didn't make much of a dent in the west negatively. But TRF will be seen as an enemy instead and will make for bad press. You don't want to be a terrorist organisation with an easy-to-remember name, which is why ISIS/ISIL or simply "Islamic State" was more often used internationally than any Arabic version. Also it's more than likely their local recruitment will be affected by adopting a non-Muslim name.

But this is a significant change in their thinking. They are experimenting with the name and "attitude" change, but it's not going to change anything from the PoV of international bodies like FATF. I feel this is just a continuation of their Twitter campaign. Since they are failing on the ground, the Pakistanis have decided to fight on the internet.

More clarity needed about this. It seems like Only one OGW killed in Gudder area encounter and some militants may have escaped. Only one body recovered eventhough police claimed 4 killed last night.

However, in Lower Munda region of Kulgam another encounter broke out in the morning and 3 more terrorists eliminated

If the news about last nights 4 is correct, then thats 7 terrorists within 12 hours in Kulgam alone.

Police version regarding today’s operation in Asthal,

April 27: Police today in a statement said that In view of inputs regarding militants planning to abduct and murder police personnel, exhaustive domination was being carried out by joint forces of Kulgam Police, RR and CRPF from the last few days. On Sunday, 26 April 2020 at about 2000 hrs one of such patrolling party of joint forces was attacked by militants numbering 4 to 6 in between villages Chehlan and Asthal.

In the exchange of firing that ensued, one army officer received fire arm injuries.

The attack was followed by exchange of firing between SFs and militants in which SFs confirmed having hit 2 to 4 militants. The exchange of firing stopped around 2200 hrs. Due to expansive area of search, undulating terrain and total darkness, it was decided to carry out search of the area after first light. When search started in the morning, dead body of an unknown militant associate along with a pistol and a grenade was recovered. Besides six SIM cards were also recovered from his pocket. While a trail of blood was found leading out of the search area which proved that apart from the terrorist associate killed, one or more militants were injured. The search for injured terrorist(s) continues.
An FIR under relevant sections has been registered in PS Kulgam.

Every time a new outfit is made, even if it is a window dressing it invariably leads to infighting. That often leads to one outfit giving out critical info about the other and the Army is making full use of the info :

The Army so far has had no combat fatalities.

Both Hizbul and Let are leaking information to Army. Hizbul's attack against J&K police is backfiring on Militants really bad, it just makes J&K plice more motivated to hunt terrorists down. Since police ae natives, their intelligence network and connections are way widespread than other forces. Almost all intelligence input about militants are coming from police now a days. ISI understood this and ordered to stop killing policeman, but Hizbul commander Naiko is not complying. With law and order & J&K police under center, militants and associates are having lots of troubles now.

Jammu: In a key development, security forces arrested a terrorist and his associated in Baramulla's Uri in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday (April 27). The forces also recovered arms and ammunition from his possession.

In another development, the Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation in Hathlanga and Charunda areas in Uri and resorted to shelling mortars and Light Machine Gun (LMG) firing. The Indian Army is giving a befitting reply to the Pakistani forces, sources said.

Earlier in the day, at least three terrorists were killed in an ongoing operation by Indian Army in Kulgam's Lower Munda. "One body has been recovered so far from the site of encounter. Search is going on," Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.

An encounter had started at Lower Munda area of Kulgam between terrorists and joint troops of 24 Battalion, 18 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), said the Kashmir Zone Police.

The security forces had launched cordon and search operations which led to the exchange of fire between them and the terrorists, according to sources.

In a First Since Article 370 Move, Kashmir Woman Shot as Police Battle Mob Seeking to Snatch Top Militant's Body

New Delhi: Police in Kashmir opened fire on a violent mob attempting to seize the body of a slain jihadist killed in a shootout with security forces, government sources have told News18.

Local resident Shahnawaza Koka, sustained gunshot injuries to both legs, becoming the first civilian injured in the use of live ammunition by police since Article 370 was rolled back in August.

The stone-throwing mob was seeking to prevent the body of Burhan Majeed Koka, the commander of Ansar Ghazwat’ul Hind, al-Qaeda’s regional affiliate in Kashmir, from being moved from the site of the shootout in his native village of Melhora, near Shopian in southern Kashmir.

Earlier this month, as first reported by New18, the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir initiated a policy of conducting the last rites of bodies of terrorists killed in combat, rather than handing them over families, a move intended to prevent pro-jihadist rallies that have erupted in parts of southern Kashmir in recent weeks.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, police sources said, about 1,500 people gathered to stage a Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza or funeral rites held without the presence of the body of the deceased, in Mailhora.

The sources said smaller mobs also attacked traffic near a railway crossing in Naina Batpora near Shopian.

Another local resident, identified by hospital authorities as Mohammad Asif, received injuries from birdshot — pellets fired from a riot-control shotgun — on his upper body, government sources said.

Koka, police said, was buried with full religious rites at a graveyard elsewhere in south Kashmir.

The 56th jihadist killed in a series of exceptionally successful counter-terrorism operations since January, Koka was appointed head of the Ansar Ghazwat’ul Hind in October, after the killing of his predecessor Abdul Hamid Lone, also known as Abdul Hameed Lelhari.

Both men were close associates of the Ansar Ghazwat’ul Hind’s founder, Zakir Bhat, also known as Zakir Musa, who was killed in May, 2019.

A one-time bachelor of sciences student, intelligence sources said, the 23-year-old Koka had dropped out of college in May, 2018, to join Zakir Bhat in the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

Police records show Koka’s father, Abdul Majeed Koka, served in the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in the 1990s, before surrendering to police.

Although details are sketchy, police believe Koka trained with the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in Pakistan for some months in 2018 before he returned and joined the Ansar Ghazwa’tul Hind.

Formed by dissident jihadists angered by what they saw as the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen’s excessive dependence on Pakistan and its intelligence services, the Ansar Ghazwat’ul Hind was initially criticised by secessionist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

In one statement, Mirwaiz asserted that the secessionist movement in Kashmir “had nothing to do with these world-level groups and they are practically non-existent in the state.”

In response, Zakir Bhat threatened to behead the secessionist political leaders “and hang their heads in Lal Chowk”. He broke ranks with the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, and joined al-Qaeda in 2017.

Large-scale clashes between pro-jihadist mobs and police were cited as among the reasons central government rule was imposed in Kashmir last year, along with sweeping restrictions on movement and internet access.

However, clashes, often centred around the killings and burials of jihadists, have again become a feature of Kashmir’s fraught landscape, government sources said.

Earlier this week, Kulgam residents Sameer Ahmad Beigh, Mehran Ahmed and Khurshid Ahmed Padder received birdshot injuries after police used shotguns against a mob at an encounter site near Lower Munda, in Kulgam district.

In mid-March, three people in Srinagar also received birdshot injuries, after protests against the demolition of illegal construction by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation turned violent.

“There’s no doubt that clashes with mobs have declined,” a senior police officer said, adding, “But there are worrying signs that the process could be reversing”.

“In the absence of any competition from pro-India politicians, the jihadists are becoming the focal points for resentments against the local administration and the quality of governance,” he added.

Earlier this month, several hundred people gathered for the burial rites of slain Jaish-e-Muhammad terrorist Sajjad Nawab Dar in Sopore, defying restrictions on gatherings.

The burial of Hizbul Mujahideen’s Mohammed Ashraf Malik in Kulgam’s Arwani also drew large crowds.

Large-scale attendance at jihadist funerals, which later escalated into clashes with police at encounter sites, had started in 2015, when large crowds had begun assembling in Kashmir with the funeral Lashkar-e-Taiba jihadist Abdul Rehman, also known as Abu Qasim.
