LCA Tejas Mk1 & Mk1A - News and discussions

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew on the Indian-made Tejas multirole fighter aircraft. The flight took place during his visit to the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. in Bangalore, which produces a light multi-role fighter. The Tejas fighter was developed in 2001 and is equipped with engines jointly developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and General Electric USA; Israeli specialists also took part in the development of the aircraft. All airframe elements are manufactured in India. The Indian Air Force is expected to receive a total of 123 aircraft. The rate of their production is stated at 20 aircraft per year. The Tejas aircraft costs $26 million.

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari says, "It is indeed a landmark event that the approval has been given for procurement of 97 additional LCA mark 1A. You are aware that we had signed a contract for 83 LCA mark 1As, the deliveries for which are to start shortly in the next few months. We already had 40 LCAs of the original IOC and FOC version. So with this, in the long run, the strength of the Indian Air Force will grow to 220 LCA mark 1As, which will equip almost ten squadrons of the Air Force. With the winding down of the MiG 21 and the MiG 27 and 23 fleets in the past, this is an ideal fit to replace the depleting strength. It's a very capable and potent aircraft and it gives our trust in the Indian defence industry capabilities. It shows that we firmly are committed towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and ensuring that a large number of our items on our inventory are made in India."

Although I don't think they will get the IFR given that internal structures would be different.

If I am not wrong internal plumbing for IFR is already available in all the LCA IOC and FOC planes except maybe on the very first 2 or 4 LCA IOC as these were older frames. So 36 to 38 planes will be able to sport IFR upgrade...

Not just any ASRAAM but the latest Block-6 version, which has arguably the most advance IIR seeker of any WVR IR guided missile as of now, along with datalinks for total passive near-BVR shot( though am not too sure about this as it was always LOAL from the very beginning!).

ASRAAM because of thicker motor has more kinetic energy and range than other WVR missiles along with the ability to pull 50Gs off the rail. This could be the biggest VLO(read J-20/J-35/KHAAN) buster of future along with MICA IR-NG.
