Tensions soar along India, Pakistan border in Kashmir
Since independence in 1947, the two nuclear-armed neighbours have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir, which both countries claim in full.

The LoC has remained volatile in the last year. According to official figures, 860 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops were reported in 2017, compared with 221 the year before.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep among Kashmir's mostly Muslim population, and most support the rebels' cause against Indian rule, despite a decades-long military crackdown to fight dissent.

Rebel groups have been fighting since 1989 for the Indian-administered portion to become independent or merge with Pakistan.

Nearly 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown. India maintains roughly 500,000 soldiers in the territory.

BSF pounds Pakistan positions across International Border with 9,000 mortar shells

NEW DELHI: The BSF has fired over 9,000 rounds of mortar shells across the International Border (IB) in Jammu in the past four days as part of "pinpointed" retaliatory action against Pakistan's unprovoked firing, destroying firing positions and fuel dumps of the Pakistan Rangers at multiple places, officials said on Monday.

Senior officials of the Border Security Force (BSF) and in the home ministry said the situation along the 190-km IB in the Jammu area was "very tense" as Pakistan had "opened" heavy fire in the entire stretch since Sunday evening.

They said the BSF had fired over 9,000 rounds of mortar shells since January 19, after "Pakistan first breached the peace and hit BSF posts and civilian areas".

The mortar shelling is in addition to an effective retaliation by an assortment of other arms and ammunition, they said.

The BSF said the force was retaliating with "pinpointed" fire which destroyed firing positions, mortar launching pads and ammunition and fuel dumps of the Pakistan Rangers at multiple places.

The force also released two small video clips purportedly showing the destruction of fuel dumps.

They said the "chicken neck" area of the border in Jammu (which was untouched till now), near Makwal and Kanachak border posts of the BSF, is also being pounded by the Pakistani forces.

"A security force jawan and a few civilians have been injured in these areas and we are receiving heavy fire here since yesterday," a senior official said.

Sources said the Indian forces have also witnessed the movement of senior commanders of the Rangers and Pakistan Army in the forward areas across the border.

"These visits, as we understand, are being undertaken by Pak commanders to motivate their troops who are getting some good pounding from the Indian side and it is also understood that many of their personnel have been hit fatally or have been injured," the official added.

The Rangers, they said, have also "refused" to talk to the BSF and come over for a flag meeting till now.

All the BSF border posts in the Jammu area have been put on "high alert" and senior commanders have been asked to be at the front "at least for the next about a week's time", they said.

The force has also stepped up the deployment of its "ambush patrols" along the IB to check infiltration, they said.

"Heavy firing aids infiltration and also security at the borders is already up in the wake of the forthcoming Republic Day celebrations," the official said.

BSF Director General K K Sharma toured the forward areas last week and it is expected that he may again visit these locations around January 26.

The BSF has lost two men in these firing incidents since January 19.

In all, 12 people, including five security personnel, have been killed and over 60 others injured in Pakistani firing from across the border in Jammu since Thursday.

Pakistanis hides its death toll , we outnumber them 10 to 1 , literally their soldiers are falling at a huge rate

Where did you get this data from???? Sounds like 10:1 boasting from across the border....... Though the point of hiding the causalities, is a specialty of PA, but i can confirm to you, it is not as bad you suggested.......

And meanwhile, they are burning off a whole lot of ammunition. For two broke nations, this is funny to read about, except for the casualties.

Unprovoked firing won't be tolerated: BSF to Pak

JAMMU: The BSF and the Pak Rangers held a flag meeting on Thursday along the International Border (IB) here during which the Indian side registered its "strong" protest on the recent spate of unprovoked firing incidents, asserting that such acts were unacceptable and would "not be tolerated".
The Border Security Force said the sector commander-level meeting took place in Suchetgarh area of the border "on the request" of the Pakistani side.

A similar request by the Indian side was "not responded to" by the Rangers a few days back, official sources had said.

The meeting was the first between the two sides since "heavy shelling and firing was experienced along the IB during the last week".

"During the meeting, the BSF strongly objected to (Pakistan's) dastardly acts of sniping at its two soldiers on January 3 and 17 and further unprovoked firing and shelling targeting a number of Indian villages, innocent civilians and their properties.

"The BSF conveyed strong protest with message that such provocative acts are unacceptable and will not be tolerated," the border guarding force said in a statement.

The 30-minute meeting held at noon saw a five-member BSF team led by BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) PS Dhiman sitting across a 10-member Pak Rangers team that was headed by Brigadier Amjad Hussain of Pak Rangers, sector commander of the Chenab (Sialkot) sector.

During this period, the statement said, the BSF "successfully foiled a number of infiltration attempts from the Pakistani soil, including neutralisation of one intruder who tried to infiltrate on January 4 in the Arnia Sector."

The BSF had fired over 9,000 rounds of mortar shells across the Jammu IB in the last few days as part of "pinpointed" retaliatory action against this "unprovoked" firing from across the border.

It said it had destroyed firing positions and fuel dumps of the Pakistan Rangers at multiple places.

Senior officials of the force and in the Union home ministry in Delhi had said that the situation along the 190-km IB here was "very tense" as Pakistan had "opened" heavy fire in the entire stretch since last evening.

The BSF Director General (DG), who recently toured the area, had said that the situation along the IB here was "very tense" and his men were on a high alert.

The last such meeting of sector commanders of the two sides was held on September 29 last year.
