"The National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS) has been approved for the Delhi Area Defence project to provide aerial protection to the capital from airborne threats by the Nirmala Sitharaman-led Defence Acquisition Council," highly placed government sources told MyNation.

As a next step for the deal, India would send a letter of request to the American administration for implementing the government to government deal, sources said.

The programme is being undertaken as the threat perception from incoming enemy missiles, drones and aircraft are on the rise because of their increasing use by terrorist organisations such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The same anti-missile system is used by the Americans to guard their national capital region in Washington DC and has been in deployment there since 2005.

The Indian Air Force has been using the Russian-origin missile systems for giving protection to the national Capital and the vital assets and vital points. The NASAMS is claimed by the Americans to be a state-of-the-art air defence system that can maximise the ability of the users to quickly identify, engage and destroy current and evolving enemy aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle or emerging cruise missile threats.

"It is owned by seven countries and has been integrated into the US National Capital Region's air defence system since 2005. In addition to the US, it is in service in Norway, Finland, Spain and the Netherlands," says the firm which manufactures the missile system for the US government on its website about the air defence system.

India recently started inducting the long-delayed Rs 20,000 crore SPYDER missile systems into the Air Force and some of the systems have already been deployed on the western frontier to thwart any misadventure from the Pakistan side.

India has also signed a deal worth Rs 17,000-crore for Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system with Israel to equip the Army Air Defence Corps to take out enemy planes and drones at ranges of up to 70 kilometres in the air.

What is NASAMS ? and Why India is keen on acquiring them ? – Indian Defence Research Wing

Technically it's "Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System," since the program was initiated by Norway and defence company Kongsberg, and first inducted by Norway for its air-defence needs, but +1 for NASAMS none-the-less. Nice to see our kit proliferating.

I doubt India will get NASAMS III or the High Mobility variants which are still in development, so here's some pics of a basic NASAMS II battery. A battery consists of eight Sentinel radar units, one electro-optical sensor, up to twelve launchers each with six missiles (SL-AMRAAM, AIM-9X block 2, SL-ESSM) and a command and control unit, along with resupply vehicles.

NASAMS defends Norwegian and D.C. airspace, has been deployed to Poland to defend NATO summits, has been exported to Chile, Finland, the Netherlands and Spain and has orders from Australia, Lithuania and Indonesia confirmed.

Aussie variants will use a Hawkei Light Protected Mobility Vehicle, while other high mobility variants will use the FMTV and HMMWV.

Not bad for a Norwegian product:).

Sudden move without any negotiation stages and signing of COMCASA is really suspicious. There is always a long phase of negotiations involved in purchase of such items whereas in this case, there was none. Even S400 deal took over 2 years to be finalised. Moreover, India already has SAMs of Indian origin like Akash and Russian ones like S300 for protecting Indian and. Moreover, Delhi is deep within India and the likely threat would be ballistic missile rather than aircraft or cruise missile

All these smells of fake news

I think there is a SLAMRAAM--ER missile that will fit the launcher now, so I wonder. SLAAMRAAM-ER is basically a RIM-162 ESSM.

But....but....butt.. i heard Pakistani offensive capabilities are like mosquito bite for "Mighty India" and they are not bothered anymore?
Then why such high expenditure to protect India from "Our Wrath"?:D:p:cool:

Delhi needed a low-tier defensive system complementing the BMD.

I always thought it would be the SPYDER, but even the NASAMS is fine. It's been in the works since quite sometime now.

Pakistan is our only adversary? Best to protect against the maximum threat against a potential adversary and have an overkill buffer against the likeliest enemy.

How different is NASAMS III?

What components are Norwegian? I suppose the radars, missiles and fire control unit are American.

First of all, this is fake news and no such discussions has been going on. The same person - Ajit Kumar Bubey has been peddling this news for some time now which is just his own news rather than any official confirmation of the deal. The NASAMS make no sense in delhi as the area is already in the middle of Indian land and not at the coast or borders to have aerial threats from planes and cruise missiles. NASAMS can't engage ballistic missiles.

I see no reason to take this seriously at all.

@Kvasir I'm most interested in radar and how its different from Akash SR-SAM or what mk-2 won't provide.

They are not comparable even though the range they operate in is similar.

According to the IAF's definition, the NASAMS would qualify as a QRSAM, similar to SPYDER-MR, while the Akash would qualify as an SRSAM.

The technological base of the Akash is currently lower, so the Akash uses the older PESA while the NASAMS uses AESA. The radar setup is completely different. Akash has a 150Km surveillance radar at the squadron/group level, and a 100Km BSR and a 60Km FCR at the battery level. NASAMS has 8 radars with ranges up to 40Km that perform both surveillance and fire control. Both setups have their advantages and disadvantages.

When it comes to missiles, the NASAMS has multiple missile and seeker options, we can even add Astra to the mix if necessary. The Aim-120 and Aim-9 are much more effective at lower altitudes and are faster. The ESSM allows the NASAMS to outrange the Akash Mk1 and match the Mk2. The Akash is more effective at higher altitudes and the ramjet allows a fully powered flight profile. The Akash Mk1S comes with an RF seeker, while the Mk1 uses command guidance.

The Akash battery is much smaller and can defend against 4 targets at a time, 2 missiles fired at 1 target. A NASAMS battery is much bigger and can engage up to 72 targets at a time, 1 missile fired at 1 target. The Akash battery can be grouped together with 3 other batteries at a time, which gives it the capability to engage 12 targets, but over a larger area than the NASAMS. Of course, with the seeker version of Akash, the number of launchers in a battery can increase, so will engaged targets.

When it comes to mobility, the IAF version of Akash and the NASAMS that we are purchasing are not highly mobile and are primarily designed to protect static targets like airfields and cities. Delhi isn't running away anywhere anytime soon after all. But the army's version of Akash is highly mobile and can keep up with tanks, since it's built on a T-72 chassis.

Both systems complement each other.

I do agree, there is no news online for thsi, and this is bolt out of blue, I am very sure its Fake news
What unexpected is that DAC cleared this deal within a year it came into news (if true) still amid Russian S-400 deal sanctions its possible. Read second link..

whom will these protect ? Delhi. Who have approved it ? Delhi. Do the math. Actually this could be a real news based on ind-us secret deals. just making news. (These protect DC BTW)

Actually I approve of this hastiness. All cities with defense production units should get this too.

What is so great about AMRAAM based defence? Doesn't India already have Akash missiles? Why does india need AMRAAM based missiles which does very little?

Washington DC is being protected is irrelevant. Why is India securing delhi with it? Also, how do you know that this is not fake news?
