Pralay and Shaurya: Conventional Strike Surface-to-Surface Missiles

So it’s the same vehicle carrying two different payloads types for two different missions.
Not exactly same, but similar enough to be produced in the same production line.
PS: Noticed that SMART is longer than Pralay.
Exactly Pralay's 2nd stage is smaller. There is a ~200 km range difference between the SMART & the Pralay SSM.

Please zoom in the image next time and see the missiles name.😂
I got confused as Indian news channels have a habit of posting misleading pictures.

BTW are Shaurya and Prahaar too are similar systems to Pralay ?
And why so many different types are being tested.

Different class, prahaar is a modified aad missile i guess, with 200 km range. Shourya is in line with agni1 type missile. Pralay is 500km ranged missile, i think we tried to develop something similar to iskander, but bit heavy.

The Shaurya, SMART, Pralay are members of the same family. The Prahaar, Pranash & Pragati missiles are derivatives of the AAD.

If you think about it we have 2 missile architectures present in the solid fueled short range SSM category. One is the architecture first seen of the Shaurya hypersonic SSM, the second is the AAD missiles architecture. DRDO is trying to converge on one of the two architectures for developing a family of missiles for various application.

So the competition was between scaling down the Shaurya & scaling up the AAD, which would offer better performance. From the looks of it the Shaurya family is winning that battle. I would not be surprised if the upcoming AD-2 missile is also based on the Shaurya family.

Video :

I wonder why the missile has PR-02 written on it. This is the 1st flight test. Maybe PR-01 has been used for ground firing tests.
Also DRDO has upgraded their camera ?
It’s the second test, it was first tested around 2018. Don’t think it made much news that time.

DRDO conducts maiden launch of indigenously developed new generation surface-to-surface missile ‘Pralay’
Posted On: 22 DEC 2021 1:12PM by PIB Delhi
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted maiden flight test of indigenously developed surface-to-surface missile ‘Pralay’, from Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on December 22, 2021. The mission has met all its objectives. The new missile followed the desired quasi ballistic trajectory and reached the designated target with high degree accuracy, validating the control, guidance and mission algorithms. All the sub-systems performed satisfactorily. All the sensors deployed near the impact point across the eastern coast, including the down range ships, tracked the missile trajectory and captured all the events.

The Missile is powered with solid propellant rocket motor and many new technologies. The missile has a range of 150-500 kilometre and can be launched from a mobile launcher. The missile guidance system includes state-of-the-art navigation system and integrated avionics.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and associated teams for this maiden development flight trial. He complimented DRDO for the fast track development and successful launch of modern surface-to-surface missile.

Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, Dr G Satheesh Reddy appreciated the team and said that this is a new generation surface-to-surface missile equipped with modern technologies and induction of this weapon system will give the necessary impetus to the Armed Forces.

The article says the test is supposed to happen & the range is 350 km. This was before the Army demanded the Pralay to be 500 km ranged. The 350km version was a derivative of the AAD. With the increasing in range DRDO shifted to a Shaurya based derivative. All the press releases are saying its a maiden test.

See this PIB is saying the same:
