Shivalik Class (Project 17 A/B) & Talwar Class Frigates

INS Tushil (F70) enroute from Russia to India made a port call at HMS Belfast, London:

It looks like the exhaust vents on the Russian VLS are on either side of the missile cells which appears similar to what the IN wants VLSRSAM's final config to be. It'd be interesting to see pics someday of the actual vents (circular in shape?) below the hatches.

Shtil is cold launched.

In that case, is the whole weight reduction exercise for VLSRSAM VLS worth the effort for saving a few kgs of weight. Don't think the overall dimensions (deck space) would change much either way. Your thoughts?
Weight wasn't the only issue, there were some issues with handling the pressure exerted on neighbouring cells and the central plenum.

All in all, VL-SRSAM VLU is a waste of space and time.

I'll never stop cribbing about the amount of free foredeck space. I don't care if VL-SRSAM & LR-LACM isn't combat ready yet. They should've put the empty VLS in:

Plenty of space mid-ship for inclined launchers. NASM-MRs when those are ready:

The new exhaust stack is well designed. Reduces thermal signature significantly:

Overall design is a cross between Shivalik class & Kolkata/Vizag class:

The weapon systems on the deck are totally flush ... not sure how they have achieved that? Did they 'sink' the VLS into the ship or raise the deck height ....? maybe a combination of both.

Changes come across as very deliberate and comprehensive... on one hand some superstructure stealth elements have been removed amidships and also on the bridge, yet there are others to improve;

- Flush foredeck
- Inclined smokestack
- elemination of secondary last atop bridge
- simpler main mast with integrated radar
- simpler mast for air search radar

I dont see the torpedo tubes?

She looks good. The topside is much less cluttered compared to P-17 or even newer P-15A/B. But the enclosed RHIB bay is gone for some reason. I kinda liked that bit about P-17.

Now if only they could replace the antique RBU-6000/IRL rotary launchers with a box design (a modular launcher firing chaff rockets, MANPADS, besides ASW rounds) it'd be awesome. It's probably not possible to move those aft though because of deck penetration compulsions.

Enclosed RHIB is gone because IN didn't like the implementation. It was time taking to operate in rough sea conditions.

If you go through the video you will see 2 Triple Torpedo Tubes.

This old thread of mine might offer some more insights:

Flush Foredeck is major plus, looks much better than the cluttered anchor mooring windlass and capstans on P15-A/B

Nice comparison - one gets a sense that Project-15 design has run its course after the 3rd iterations, with little room for future improvements, while Project-17 has demonstrated much more design growth.

So the deck has been 'raised', thus masking the VLS and mooring equipment. Stealth aside, protects the crew as well.

Don't know if the dimensions have been released yet, but the beam (and foredeck) looks much wider than P-17 when seen from above. This is a characteristic of Western ships like the Burke class. The Russian Kashin lineage probably severely limits the dimensions of P-15A/B.

The beam would not be wider as that will be a fundamentally a new hull. However its correct to say that beam of Project-17 is wider than Project-15. There are pros and cons but generally a narrower beam is stable and fast, while wider beam allows for more equipment and crew comfort.
