Sukhoi Su-30MKI

This is a better option for IAF. Have three sqns of Brahmos heavy aircraft separately. This will help take the SU-30MKI sqns level to 15 including replacement of crashed aircraft.

But why are they saying, these Su-30s will be only assembled in India and not manufactured as the rest?????

Terrible idea. The money is better spent on more LCAs and Rafales. I don't want the follow up order of 36 more Rafales to be affected by anything.

But if we do have the money for it, it's better to increase LCA by 20 more jets with the MK1A airframe and Mk1 avionics instead of throwing more money at an entirely unnecessary MKI.

That's completely unnecessary. In 3 years, Brahmos-M will become production ready and even regular MKIs will carry 5.

36 all day long flying Rafale against 40 poor reliability SU....
"Russian Su-30SM crashed near Hmeimim airbase in Syria, all crew members died. Accordind to the first estimantes - due to technical failure"
even after over 80% serviceability during Ex Gagan Shakti, would you still call it poor? And this serviceability has not been achieved at a huge maintenance deal like that of Rafale that too for just 75% availability.

I have always been in favour of 15 Su-30MKI sqns for IAF. The longlegs of SU-30MKI made it strike targets outside Sounda straight after getting airborne from Jodhpur. a Rafale will need double the amount of IFR to do the same sortie.

You will have to take into consideration the drop tanks for the Rafale.

Rafale on french carrier had a 99% availability (but using some others on the ground as a spare parts tanks). So this instantaneous sustain rate means nothing.

exact, but french carrier operations are not long (some months max) and we don't know whether or did french replace the carrier wing planes on duty
No on a carrier you have naturally a stock of spares, and maintener are military people able to work 16 h by day. That explain the level of availability. For other planes, during peace time, maintenance is done tu fulfill the planed missions and not more for cost constraints. There is some Rafale which are in storage, but not a lot, generally it's the one returning from OPEX, but there is also some Rafale able to reach an operational status soon, on which the maintenance is delayed because we don't need them. To catch the real availability that we can reach there is two figures available one is the operational availability which is around 50 % and the other is the technical availability which is around 97 %, and on a Carrier, during operation, the operational availability is the same as the technical availability.
In War time or in Crise time we will be able to reach the technical availability for all our aircrafts due to the support of our industrie. And during operation we are also able to use the Rafale at 500% the rate of peace time that is to say 1250 h/plane and by year.

A Sukhoi Su-30MKI (NATO reporting name Flanker-C) of the Indian Air Force reportedly managed to detect the latest Chinese Chengdu J-20 jet fighter, which is supposed to be a top-of-the-line stealth aircraft operated by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), reports Indian Defence Research Wing. According to the outlet, when the new Chinese jets where conducting flight training over Tibet, Indian pilots on Russian-made Su-30MKIs managed to detect and track them from Indian airspace.

“The Sukhoi’s radar can see them. The new Chinese jets are not so invisible after all. No special technology is required to detect the J-20, as it can be detected by ordinary radar stations,” Indian Air Force commander Arup Shaha said.

The Chinese Chengdu J-20 has been in development since 2002 and was made using stealth technology. It was entered into service in March 2017, with nine prototypes and two pre-serial units built so far. The J-20 has recently successfully completed its first maritime training exercises.

Since **** report has been mentioned and quoted, we like to make avail further information on the topic for better understanding of the topic, since we have been bombarded with E-Mail for more details from all sections. The article in Question was pen downed by Abhoy Roy for ” MY TAKE ” Section where he had only speculated How Indian Su-30MKI might have detected J-20s after IAF Chief confirmed that Su-30MKI Can Detect J-20 in Recorded Media Interview after Conclusion of IAF’s Gagan Shakti Air Exercise.

Please find Direct Link to the Original Article and also to Original Video where Indian Air Force chief Birender Singh Dhanoa while addressing a press conference in Punjab’s Halwara made that comment. Since it is in Hindi and lot of our International Readers might not be able to understand it, we have also provided Translation from Hindi to English Below.

Indian Reporter ( 0.05): How much threat we have from China? Since China said they will not give even an inch anywhere and they on the border are building Roads! , So What will you like to say about it?

Indian Air Force chief (0.18): Our forces deployed in the northern border are capable of taking on the Chinese threats, as per airforce to airforce goes you will know that in Tibet they have more problems in comparison to us since their airfields are at high altitudes and also they don’t have required infrastructure. Against China, our air force is on the Strong wicket and our new induction process are more than adequate to take on the J-20.

Indian Reporter ( 1.00): It does not come under the radar? (referring to J-20)
Indian Air Force chief (1.03): Nooooh , It is not, it is not, how do I say it, it not so stealthy that it can’t be picked up with any radar, Your Su-30 Radar (referring to IAF’s Sukhoi-30MKI) is good enough and can pick it up from many kilometers away.
