Sukhoi Su-30MKI

as of March 31, 2016, only 56,6% out of 41 naval Rafale M were combat ready. Don't think current situation differs conserably
41 Rafale M = the whole fleet of french CATOBAR planes.
On the french carrier there are now 20 to 25 planes. Not 40.
So you can't use the whole fleet stat to judge the availability of those on the carrier.

DAC clears proposals worth more than Rs 6,900 crore, includes thermal imaging system for night fighting capabilities

The DAC also accorded approval for undertaking Design and Development of the Long Range Dual Band Infrared Imaging Search and Track System (IRST) for SU-30 MKI aircraft and subsequently, for procurement of at least 100 IRSTs. The system will be able to operate in day and night conditions and substantially enhance the capabilities of the aircraft.

Wasn't this supposed to part of the Super Sukhoi upgrade ? Are they doing it in isolation now ? What's the status of the Super Sukhoi upgrade?

A Sukhoi Su-30MKI (NATO reporting name Flanker-C) of the Indian Air Force reportedly managed to detect the latest Chinese Chengdu J-20 jet fighter, which is supposed to be a top-of-the-line stealth aircraft operated by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), reports Indian Defence Research Wing. According to the outlet, when the new Chinese jets where conducting flight training over Tibet, Indian pilots on Russian-made Su-30MKIs managed to detect and track them from Indian airspace.

“The Sukhoi’s radar can see them. The new Chinese jets are not so invisible after all. No special technology is required to detect the J-20, as it can be detected by ordinary radar stations,” Indian Air Force commander Arup Shaha said.

The Chinese Chengdu J-20 has been in development since 2002 and was made using stealth technology. It was entered into service in March 2017, with nine prototypes and two pre-serial units built so far. The J-20 has recently successfully completed its first maritime training exercises.

Since **** report has been mentioned and quoted, we like to make avail further information on the topic for better understanding of the topic, since we have been bombarded with E-Mail for more details from all sections. The article in Question was pen downed by Abhoy Roy for ” MY TAKE ” Section where he had only speculated How Indian Su-30MKI might have detected J-20s after IAF Chief confirmed that Su-30MKI Can Detect J-20 in Recorded Media Interview after Conclusion of IAF’s Gagan Shakti Air Exercise.

Please find Direct Link to the Original Article and also to Original Video where Indian Air Force chief Birender Singh Dhanoa while addressing a press conference in Punjab’s Halwara made that comment. Since it is in Hindi and lot of our International Readers might not be able to understand it, we have also provided Translation from Hindi to English Below.

Indian Reporter ( 0.05): How much threat we have from China? Since China said they will not give even an inch anywhere and they on the border are building Roads! , So What will you like to say about it?

Indian Air Force chief (0.18): Our forces deployed in the northern border are capable of taking on the Chinese threats, as per airforce to airforce goes you will know that in Tibet they have more problems in comparison to us since their airfields are at high altitudes and also they don’t have required infrastructure. Against China, our air force is on the Strong wicket and our new induction process are more than adequate to take on the J-20.

Indian Reporter ( 1.00): It does not come under the radar? (referring to J-20)
Indian Air Force chief (1.03): Nooooh , It is not, it is not, how do I say it, it not so stealthy that it can’t be picked up with any radar, Your Su-30 Radar (referring to IAF’s Sukhoi-30MKI) is good enough and can pick it up from many kilometers away.

The discussion ends at 1.16. We will let our Readers Discuss and comment below.
Chinese would be idiots if they had not installed a lens to magnify the RCS in peace time.....

as F22 when they come to aero show....

IAF to send Sukhoi to Australia for multilateral drill

Moving a step towards consolidating the Quad, the Indian Air Force is set to send its Su-30MKI fighter jets to Australia for its maiden participation in the multilateral air Exercise Pitch Black 2018.

At least four to five front-line combat aircraft and one C-17 transporter will fly to Australia in July for the three-week-long air exercise between July 27 and August 17.

This will be India's maiden participation in the biggest air combat training programme in the southern hemisphere involving several other air forces, sources told DH.

In 2015, India and Australia had agreed on the IAF's participation in the multilateral war game.

Following a bilateral meeting between the then defence minister Manohar Parrikar and his Australian counterpart Kevin Andrews, the two sides gave a public statement on India's presence at Pitch Black 2016.

The IAF, however, couldn't make it because of certain operational issues.

In January this year, Australian Defence Industry Ministry Christopher Pyne confirmed India's participation at Pitch Black 2018 while giving a lecture at the National Defence College in Delhi.

Taking place once in every two years since 2006, the drill began with Singapore, Thailand, the UK and the US and grew to include France and Malaysia in 2008.

New Zealand participated for the first time in 2010, followed by Indonesia in 2012.

The United Arab Emirates also took part in 2014, followed by Canada, Germany and Netherlands in 2016.

The manoeuvres — practised largely in vast stretches of northern Australia — is to learn more about offensive counter air and defensive counter air combat in a simulated environment.

India-Australia strategic relations are slowly on the rise. The two navies began their annual maritime exercise in 2015 and a second edition took place in 2017.

New Delhi, however, didn't permit Canberra to be part of the Malabar multilateral naval exercise involving the US and Japanese Navy.

India's decision earned a rare praise from China.

India, Japan, Australia and the US are believed to have formed a Quad to tackle a rising China in the Indo-Pacific region.

But only sketchy official details on the Quad are available from any of these nations.

Sukhoi Jet crashes in Maharashtra's Nashik, pilots eject safely

Sukhoi Jet crashes in Maharashtra's Nashik, pilots eject safely

A Sukhoi-30 jet on the test flight crashed in Maharashtra's Nashik district on Wednesday morning.

There were no casualties and both the pilots ejected safely before the plane hit a ground at Wavi -Tushi village near Pimpalgaon Baswant town.

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI twinjet multirole air superiority fighter was under-production aircraft of HAL.

The aircraft, developed by Russia's Sukhoi and built under licence by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), had taken off from the HAL airstrip near Nashik.

HAL crashed aircraft won't be replaced even though they get the insurance money..

What's even more shocking is attrition of lost aircraft also won't be replaced.

Why is this hate ?

High maintenance ?
Or did we ordered excessive heavy fighters ?

I might attribute it to improper maintenance, and using the plane more than the recommended hours

I do not rule out another 40 SU-30MKIs with AESA and much more powerful avionics for IAF as part of SFC. This iwll be to make up for the attrition and also build up capability.

If we are going for a new order for SFC then why not go for Su35. They are much more stealthy right?.

SFC wants Rafale, but it will be under IAF control.

There is no need to replace the MKIs. We already have 40 more than we need. Even 230 is too big, forget 270.

Super Sukhoi is just on paper,
The avionics some of them are being used and some of them are not, For example, is there an operational Russian AESA for Su-30 MKI?
They have for MiG-29/35

yes but how about having commonality of fleet. Have you heard of super Su-30MKI. may be we can go for them.
