Sukhoi Su-30MKI

Long back I had written that final count of SU-30MKI in IAF will be 15 sqns. IAF is now very actively considering the proposal of HAL for additional 40 SU-30MKI. IMHO this figure might go to 60 to keep Nasik line busy till 2023 to make way for the first MII Rafale roll out from DRAL

SFC wants Rafale, but it will be under IAF control.

There is no need to replace the MKIs. We already have 40 more than we need. Even 230 is too big, forget 270.
I have an inkling that more Su30's might come. It's not ideal, but its not the worst thing that can happen.

Man, that MKI looks regal, might be my personal Bias, but it is the prettiest bird.

Hope we'll finalize upgrade and make the upgraded ones ..

Also when will be the last batch of contracted su 30 production end .

Considering both MK1 and Mk1A are delayed, the IAF will soon be short by 3 to 4 squadrons.

But if the govt gives the IAF the choice between 2 squadrons of MKI or Rafale, we know what the IAF will pick. It's not like the delivery time frame will be different for either jet.

The only way we will buy more MKI is if it's a political decision. The govt will be able to avoid more problems with the Rafale hullabaloo, and they will be able to placate Russia for the indefinite delay on FGFA.

The problem with this new order is, the jets will come in as CKDs from Russia and HAL will only assemble the jets. So it goes against the Make in India program. Otoh, Dassault will do much more than assembly with just a 36 jet order.

Any decision on MKI will either be due to sheer desperation on part of IAF since the govt is under pressure about Rafales, or a political deal with Russia. We will know for sure post elections.

Anyway, regardless of whether we order MKI or Rafale, we will get either jet 3 years after contract signature anyway. So the time frame is irrelevant.

India makes Su30 in house. There is no question of buying rafale if given a choice. I wonder why none of you notice how weak Rafale engine of 50/75kN are. It is really very poor engine.

The new order of MKI, if placed, will come from Russia.

And you have no clue about aircraft in general.

Why IAF are actively considering Su 30 now when they didn't even want attrition replacement.

What will Nasik plant do after 2023 ?
What relation is there with DRAL

IAF are there getting impressed with Upgrade plans or just mere increase in count .. with most bang for the buck.

Most of the IAF sanctioned Strength was made up of Short range interceptors (Mig-21) and then the MiG-23/27 and then Jaguars
But now in a way, we have replaced MiG-21 by Su-30 MKI as our main plane. Consider the Range of MiG-21 vs Su-30 MKI ? Huge differnce.
Su-30 MKI outperforms MiG-21 in terms of ability to detect enemy planes, able to carry three times more weapons, and that too of much longer range, and for almost 4 times the distance.
IAF is just counting the planes in numbers, Does the capability of the planes do not count? When the MiG-21 (purely defensive plane due to its short range) is replaced by Su-30 MKI which is an air dominiation plane designed to dominate the enemy skies, why are the numbers being so significant? What we have lost in nos, we have in terms of capabiliy.

IF IAF is worrying about numbers, they should buy kites of few lakh rupees and teach their pilots to fly those, that might bring the Squadron strength of "planes" to more than 50 squadrons, Guess what, low maintenance, can use and throw, no ToT required, is Made in India.
Get some sense into the nuts who sit on IAF top brass chairs.

Russia has reduced the nos of squadrons too, but they have improved the capability, The MiG-21 replaced by longer raanged MiG-29 and Su-30 and Su-35 thus few planes of few squadrons can manage air space which earlier needed more squadrons to plug the gaps.

Also having longer ranged planes means a force multiplier, where more planes can be brought up at a point to force the enemy to back down, thats not possible with shorter ranged planes

And why would new Su-30 MKI come from Russia?
I find your logic very absurd, when you claim that next Su-30 MKI would come from Russia when HAL is already building them in Nasik where we have production lines, but very confident of Rafale Make in India even though there is no line in India or being built yet ... Funny, or maybe its just random crap?

Uttam AESA is being tested on Tejas then my question is why can't we use it with Sukhoi? It will be easier and less costly for us for super sukhoi upgrades as only engine will be required from Russia.

Nasik plant will than changeover to upgrading SU-30MKIs. This wil keep all the lines of haL busy till 2030. This will justify another production agency like DRAL to make Rafales and all the chatter of denying HAL work will become useless.

You are trying to justify Rafale just because you are infatuated with it. Rafale should have EJ200 engine to make it fit for flying with reasonable speed and load.

India can use AESA radar only after it is ready. But Super Sukhoi is also about engine upgrade. I think India does not want Super Sukhoi as that will make India import Al41F engine. India makes Al31F engine in Koraput and importing new engine is not desirable.

@randomradio

Because the Super Sukhoi program is with Russia.

Legally, the first choice is always the OEM. This is signed in the contract.

HAL wants to use the Nashik plant for the FGFA line.

Because HAL won't manufacture the MKIs, they will only assemble it. Irkut will manufacture any new MKIs.

Problem is forward bases cannot shelter bigger planes
