Sukhoi Su-30MKI

Question -
We have approx 261 Sukhoi 30Mki as of now, 12 more on order. Then also I see only 12 squadrons of Sukhoi. For 272 fighters shouldn't there be a minimum of 13 to 14 squadrons ?
A detailed answer would be better.

Su-30 MKI is Huge, Heavy, and Hard to maintain. At any point in time, almost 20-30 airframes are in repair or overhaul under HAL or 11 BRD (Base Repair Depot ). And it takes a minimum of 15 months to MRO.

Also, TACDE operates 4-6 airframes.

So, i believe the final number would be operational 13.5 squadrons. Its better not to raise more to have a decent availability for active squadrons.

I think we need an addition 2 squadrons of mki capable of brahmos needs to be manufactured. One for exclusively to be stationed at A&N and another in some part of central India, capable to knock both china & pakistan.

I get your point that a lot of them remain in upgrade or overhauling phase a lot of time and few remain in Gwalior TACDE.
Now squadrons can be 13 or 14 not 13 and a half. Thanjavur is the 12 th squadron and I fear it maybe it's last. If someone can share some definite info that there will be 13th or 14th squadron as well, that will help.

Only Air Headquarters can give you definite info.

The 13th squadron is yet to be raised. Current effort is going into raising the 12th squadron, which should be ready within this FY. The 13th will likely go to Chabua.

Then I believe a half squadron is planned. Not sure where though, I reckon Car Nicobar.

Why do you need a AL missile more than 600 kms range?
AGM 158 ER : 950 km
AGM86 B: 2400 Km
AGM86 C: 1100Km
AGM129:3700Km(Retired )
Above all are the prominent alcm & its range. There is enough room for a 600 km brahmos or 1500km Nirbhay alcm with IAF to target chinese assets in scs.
If

Even with 300km range, it will be deadly weapon. Only issues is we don't have it !!
It may or may be deadly, but problem is it is envisioned for its first flight in 2024 and it will definitely takes its own time to perfect it. And the range is short if you looks beyond 2030.
