Tejas Mk2 (Medium Weight Fighter) - News and discussions

Previous timeline for LCA Mk2:
Early 2021 = metal cutting
Mid-end 2022 = ground trials
End 2023 = First flight

Now COVID has brought in a 5-month delay in the entire process. So you can expect first flight only in early 2024. If they plan better they can still try and stick to a 2023 first flight, but it's not a good idea to count on it. Not considering unplanned delays.

Detailed design phase is generally a 12-month process. But since the LCA has been worked on since so long, this phase can actually be completed even sooner than that.

AMCA's detailed design phase has taken a little longer since they brought in design changes in the middle. Suffice to say AMCA is a step ahead of LCA Mk2 since AMCA is nearly ready to move into the FSED phase.

We should plan for an EW version of LCA similar to F18 Growler, At least we can start with LCA TD for EW demonstrator.

MKI is gonna do that sort of job. Anyway, Growler type capability is not needed. The Americans designed it to operate out of carriers. We have business jets for the same. Also, modern EW is very different from what the Growler does.

HAL won Boeing best quality supplier award in2009 and in the top10 of their supplier list for last 2-3 years running. Whatever it was, issue was resolved. So don't just blame hal for whatever reasons plaguing Indian defence.
They were waybe nice in 2009. But poor in 2015... not the first time we are aware of that about HAL.

too short leg plane for this role => quite useless.

I don't think each LCA can carry EW package similar to Rafael as it's a lightweight fighter. So a dedicated EW version of LCA for enemy air-defense suppression will definitely add to our ground attack capabilities.

Ok. This isn't a parody a/c.

It's just that time of the year again. Where in spite of all the doom & gloom, some good Samaritans go out of the way to cheer you up. Or perhaps because of it.

Whatever Dr Deodhare maybe, he's certainly a super optimist. Better than most we have here.
So when can we expect MWF to be inducted. If ever.. As a fellow realist (pessimist).

Do we know the % of LRU's that are being built for Tejas Mk1A can be used as is on Tejas Mk2? There is not much time between now and 2026, with Mk1A to be built and HAL planning for Tejas LIFT (SPORT) as well. Not sure if HAL is adequately staffed to focus on all these critical projects, with AMCA also in the reckoning. HAL should help itself in creating a Public - Private partnership with a Private enterprise to hive off the manufacturing or to create additional capacity. Between Mk1A, Mk2, LIFT & AMCA, there will a time between 2027 - 2035, where we will need capacity to manufacture close to 60 jets a year (including a export orders).

Metal cutting of the IOC jet is expected to begin in 2023, a few months after the first flight. HAL is attempting concurrency, the production will happen alongside flight testing so we will likely see a full squadron induction a year after IOC.

Are Tejas Mk1A & Mk2 independent of each other? If the development of Mk1A or start of production of Mk1A is delayed (contract not being signed till Q1 next year), will this have an impact to the metal cutting of Mk2?

Yeah, they are two independent projects, so any delays with one won't affect the other. Development of Mk1A and Mk2 have some relation, but production has little to no relation. Mk1A is by HAL and Mk2 is by ADA. So most of the core avionics of Mk2 will be different from Mk1A, but there will be some similarities when it comes to the airframe.
