Tejas Mk2 (Medium Weight Fighter) - News and discussions

Very aggressive timelines here. It would take by the mid of 2023 for the aircraft to be completed imo.
MK 2 can also be divided into Block 1 and Block 2

If we dont insist on UTTAM and IRST
MK 2 can be achieved before 2025

AESA 2052 , DARE -- SPJ , Canards , More Internal Fuel and More Hardpoints -- These things are more important for the ability to fight for a longer period of time

Uttam , Internal EW suite , IRST can wait for Block 2

If we go for everything at once , it will only cause delays

MK 1 FOC delays happened because of Refuelling Probes , Quartz Radome
And GH 23 gun

MK2 is again a new airframe. Testing and certification will take time irrespective of IAF choosing any AESA/IRST.

The opposite. If stuff is changed at this point in time, it will require 2 more years for ADA to change the configuration to support imports, so first flight will be pushed to 2025 instead.

Your recommendation would have been fine in 2019, we are almost in 2022 now, that's 3 years too late.

So again for MK 2 it will be a case of
" All or Nothing "

That also means that Delays are inevitable

MK 2 is meant to Replace Mirage 2000 , MiG 29 and Jaguars

So these planes will also start crashing like MIG 21

Manish K. Jha- When can we expect the first prototype?

R. Madhavan-
That is a roll-out. After that it takes about a year’s time for it to go for taxi trials. And then, from there onwards the testing and certification happens. So hopefully, by 2026 all the testings’ will be completed and the production activity will be started from there onwards.

HAL LCA Mk2 fighter aircraft

So we are trying to do it as quickly as possible, but then that is a total leap as far as the technologies are concerned. So we have new technologies, internal-efficient storages, then a few sensors, stealth features. So there are so many new technologies. It takes some time, because it’s the first time we are trying to develop many of them. So it will take some time. It’s not like it is an upgrade from Mark1.

We have already ordered the LCA Mk1A. 2 squadrons of Mk1 and 4 of Mk1A will fill the gap. This will be followed by 6 squadrons of LCA Mk2.
MK2 is still not confirmed, and most likely it will never materialise. New air cheif is not interested much I believe, atleast he didn't mention about MK2 in any of his press meet.

It all depends if we end up buying the Gripen E's in the MMRCA. Then MK2 gets cancelled and then maybe we can focus on the TEDBF and AMCA completely. Honestly, this is not a bad idea.

Navy isn't buying LCA, they are going for TEDBF. Mk2 is for the AF, it got confirmed years ago.

It's not a great idea. The India Rafale specific modifications cost 2 billion +. Imagine spending that much for that just to buy 36 or 72 planes. Even though India has tons of experience with operating multiple different jets from different countries or whatever it's still a major problem. India should be downsizing the number of different platforms, the vast number is a big reason for the crashes. Have to learn like 10 different maintenance things instead of learning 4 or 5 planes really well.

Nothing in the short term can be done without irreparably harming the long term plans and interests of the IAF. Sticking to the plan is easy when things are going well obviously. Note i'm not belittling the airmen lives or something. Deepest sadness and sympathy, but that has to come second to national interest.

Not confirmed what? Fund already cleared, detailed design completed, tenders out for parts and roll out scheduled for next year.

Mk2 will fly with or without IAF. Didn't mention doesn't mean they don't buy it. That decision is 5 years away.

Don't worry, the "Gripen/F-16 for India" crowd is gonna be very disappointed when the shortlist is out.

IAF will have to purchase the MK2, they must be forced to do so and the defense industry must be forced to come up with a competent product.

Sometimes i wonder whether today's air warfare has forced IAF pilots to subject the Mig-21 Bison to situations that it is unsuited for. For example the M21 has to fight against more modern aircraft which have FBW, better avionics etc which have to be countered. So the young pilots have to use an old type aircraft with older technologies while also being trained for newer types also.

Do we have more accidents with our older aircraft than PAF? Or is this conclusion incorrect?

Only 6 MK2 squadrons to replace Jaguars, M2000s and Mig29s? Will the Jags be replaced first?
