Capabilities and Specs of AASM Hammer, the Rocket-Bomb Hybrid Weapon That France Wants to Give Ukraine

France committed to supply "hundreds" of smart bombs to Ukraine, most likely referring to the AASM Hammer, an air attack weapon which has a version of 1,000 kg of weight

Ukraine will receive a new batch of SCALP cruise missiles from France, otherwise known as Storm Shadow, and some unspecified bombs, expected to arrive alongside French President Emmanuel Macron with a work trip to Kyiv this February. The new provision is dedicated to the signing of a bilateral agreement between the countries, similar to the one earlier concluded between Ukraine and the UK.

The announcement comes from President Macron himself during a press conference. He specified that Ukraine would get 40 more SCALP missiles for long-range strikes and "several hundred bombs." Although he didn't mention the name of the product, we can most certainly assume that this is the AASM Hammer from Safran.

This is because such weapons usually don't get an additional announcement if it's not about a new type or a particularly sophisticated weapon is to be provided. And France possesses an option that fits both descriptions and would have much value if supplied to Ukraine.

Some label the AASM Hammer as a hybrid of a bomb and a missile but technically it is an ordinary bomb with a special attachment kit that increases the range and precision of strike.

Central to the design is either a 250-kg Mk 82 or a 1,000-kg BLU 109 or Mk 8, as shown below. The tail of the kit, called Range Extension Kit (REK), can be equipped with a solid fuel engine; the head comes in three variants of guidance systems: satellite only or with additional thermal or laser semi-active guidance. Additionally, there's an option of airburst detonation.

The declared range of the bomb is over 70 km. This is an important parameter because it allows dropping the standoff weapon from a relatively safe distance, although it still depends on the altitude of the carrier during the launch. The bomb's manufacturer provides the following infographic to illustrate how the AASM Hammer is used from a low-altitude nap-of-the-earth flight.

It does not allow for detailed estimates but we can see the bomb can attack from within the covered distance of a medium-range air defense missile system. This is approximately between 20 km and 100 km.

Next, there is the issue of integrating this weapon into the arsenal of Ukrainian aircraft, if it does get provided to Ukraine's Air Force. The current main AASM operator is Rafale, there were also trial launches performed by the F-16, Mirage 2000, and the Mirage F1 which was additionally equipped with Hasas (Hammer Stand Alone System). Also, India used to buy these bombs in 2020 to integrate with Tejas.

The AASM Hammer bombs were utilized in Afghanistan and Libya with a reported 99% effectiveness.

La France fait la promotion de ses canons Caesar pour soutenir l'Ukraine
France promotes its Caesar guns to support Ukraine

Nexter will be able to produce 72 Caesars next year, tripling its production rate. This offer is of interest to Ukraine, which is very satisfied with the performance of this artillery piece, but new financing mechanisms need to be found.

French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu launched the new "artillery coalition" in Paris on Thursday, involving 23 countries to supply Kiev with the mortars, cannons, rocket launchers and heavy ammunition it needs. At the last minute, Ukrainian Defence Minister Roustem Oumerov cancelled his visit for "security reasons". At present, Ukraine is being helped by some sixty countries in the Ramstein contact group, which coordinates bilateral and multilateral arms deliveries to Kiev.

To organise long-term support and speed up the transition from Soviet to NATO-compatible weaponry, the countries have agreed to create "capability" groups according to the type of weapon. This is how France came to co-lead the artillery group with the United States. It is also taking part in the "air defence coalition", to be led by Germany.

A gun appreciated in Ukraine

As the conflict settles into a war of attrition, the reinforcement and coordination of military aid is becoming a key issue. Highly satisfied with the Caesar self-propelled gun assembled by Nexter, the French subsidiary of the Franco-German group KNDS, the Ukrainians are calling for further deliveries. The Ukrainian forces currently operate 49 guns, 30 of which have been delivered by France and 19 by Denmark. Kiev has also purchased a new batch of six CESAR from its own funds, which are ready for delivery.

Yesterday, Sébastien Lecornu pointed out that under pressure from the government, Nexter has halved the manufacturing time for the gun and can now produce six guns a month, compared with just two a month in 2022.

Production of the new Caesars _ a minimum of 72 new guns by 2024 _ must go first to Ukraine, added the French defence minister. All that remains to be done is to find the financing mechanisms to direct them to Kiev: direct purchase, purchase by partner countries prepared to entrust them to Ukraine, co-financing, grouped orders, with or without the support of the European Peace Facility, etc.

A budget of 300 million

Sébastien Lecornu has said that he can release €50 million from the Ukraine support fund to finance a further twelve for Ukraine. And the coalition is due to discuss the purchase of the other 60, a bill of around €250 million "There is no alternative to modern artillery, we must continue our efforts and increase our ammunition production," Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said in a video conference.

The problem is to provide sufficient ammunition and to bring Nexter closer to Kiev to ensure the maintenance of the guns and even the manufacture of ammunition. In the immediate term, Mr Lecornu welcomed the ramp-up in the manufacture of 155 mm shells, 3,000 of which will leave the Nexter factory at La-Chapelle-Saint-Ursin every month, compared with 2,000 per month in 2023 and 1,000 per month in 2022.

This ramp-up is far from sufficient to meet demand, but gunpowder is suffering from a worldwide shortage, and the Eurenco plant in Bergerac, which is due to restart gunpowder production in France, has just laid the foundations for production in 2025.

Not bad, it's a force multiplier.

Yep, Pic posted it.

All their old jets can actually be integrated with it. I'm wondering if the same will be done with the F-16s as well.
A full integration to F-16 was done in 2014
