Treason is a pretty serious offence.... in peacetime. In wartime you're basically committing suicide as well as treason.
The West actually proposed a deal where Russia kept Crimea but it was demilitarised, however Ukraine rejected that deal before it was even put to Russia. So Ukraine's position is more hard-line than the West's, and who can blame them, it's their country.
There's not going to be any negotiation that allows Putin to portray the outcome of this war as a victory. Whilst that remains his goal, the war is certain to outlast him.
