Doesn't take away from the fact that there were deep connections even otherwise between the Communist leadership & the pre Nazi German leadership. Receiving valuable forex was a good reason for doing so given the depression .
So was obliging the SU for withdrawal from WW-1 in the wake of the Russian revolution , thereby clearly consolidating known fault lines between UK , France et al vis a vis the SU establishing it's bloc in Europe with Germany playing the balancing power.
Analagous to the west led by the US bolstering up China only to battle it now . Situation then & now is weirdly complicated. I've read accounts of how Mussolini sized up Hitler accurately & rushed to the UK & France for support only returning to Germany after being rebuffed repeatedly .
The accounts we've access to of WW-2 are grossly one sided. The future invalid who died in his own waste who's hailed as the leader of the millennium for delivering speeches in a garbled tone once declared not in a moment of self aggrandisement but of candour that history would be kind to him as he intended to write it .
