People keep referring to the glowing example of the rationalist atheistic self respect movement of Periyar and his Dravidian politics with its emphasis on anti Brahmanism. Guess what ? Practically all the caste violence against the Dalits there are the work of the OBC. Karunanidhi takes great pride in declaring himself an atheist and mocking Hindu Gods while his wives ( he's a bigamist , married thrice more trigonometry than bigamy ) do the rounds of pilgrimage spots in South Kanara performing all the Brahminical superstitions like KalSarpa yagya , etc that he reviles . Incidentally , Periyar's anti Hindu and anti Brahmin diatribe extended to demonising Ram as an Aryan invader while eulogising Ravan - a Brahmin no matter which copy of the Ramayana you refer to - whether Valmiki or Kamba's. Such is the state of confusion .

Periyar was a Telugu guy from my caste grouping, but nobody i know subscribes to the Dravidian or Anti-Brahmin ,Anti-Hindu agenda of Periyar he got encouraged by British to sell the idea of Aryan,Dravidian ,so he capitalized on it and that movement or idea is dead now.
Karunanidhis wives are all devout Hindus who do daily pujas in their homes. He is a namesake atheist, even he is realizing now mocking Hindu gods or customs will get him zero votes.His son stalin is doing Temple runs nowdays to seek Hindu votes.
Even this plan of Congress will die soon.

My grandfather was a farmer landed in city with meager money got a Govt. job and educated rest of his 5 brothers, got them into Govt. jobs. nobody imposed or stopped him from getting a job. Fun fact, We live in a Brahmin colony which my Grand father and a few others created that colony, i found nobody imposed anything on me or my family.

He made sure that all his sons studied to the level our conditions allowed us to.
My father and uncles had to sleep empty stomach at night because of poverty. They were able to study only because they got scholarships on the basis of merit.

Exactly, that is what i mean, All you need is a Brain. Nobody stops you from educating yourself or competing in exams or jobs.

Some of my friends who are token SC/ST whose parents are MLA's MP. IAS,IPS and Doctors etc.. They also get reservations and SC/ST scholarships in college. I mean how is it, children of a IPS officer or a Doctor are socially inhibited or poverty stricken?
Reservations should be based on Economic status of the family. Merit should be encouraged.

Like we can pillory Savarkar for his groveling apologies to the British but keep mum on Gandhi's experiments in celibacy . Btw - I never referred to Periyar's wife but Karunanidhi's. You are seeing only the effects of a deeper cause. The cause is that it pays to divide the people and then become their leader. This is the very basis of all of Indian politics. We prefer to vote for someone whom we think is speaking for 'us'. Someone who is a member of 'us'. 'us' is a rather arbitrary choice and politicians redefine 'us' every time there is an election. 'us' can be Hindu Muslim. 'us' can be North South. So on and so forth.

You know, there is a bunch of people who are very similar to 'us' Indians. They formed a nation based on a state religion. They don't very often see a government serving full terms or people not fighting and protesting against each other. Or for that matter getting electricity, medical care, education etc.

The solution? Let us start separating 'us' from 'our interests' and thing will become somewhat better.

by having a state religion you limit the venues for divide and mischief which can be done by Politicians. When you have limited options you cant do much can you? Now, you have unlimited options by being Secular, In general a country that has state religion. tends to be less divided than countries that have no state religion. Because Religion is a binding factor for a country. UK was able to rule world because it had state religion, it is now in bad shape because it lost its religion

Division is the EFFECT and NOT the CAUSE!

So long the CAUSE remains, the EFFECT will manifest it in one way or the other. Its whack a mole. You whack one and another pops up. How many 'state' dictates will you put then? State religion? State language? State Caste? State Race? State Economic State? State favoured 'Region'? So on and so forth.

BTW if you want to see a nation with state religion which could have been our future, look no further than Pakistan. It is divided. Heck in the past it was so much divided that it broke! On sects, on language, On economic status, On school of religions, On political aligiances, On regions and what not.
