US May Offer THAAD System to India to Block Russian S-400 Deal

The maximum speed of 2000km MRBM is about 4km/s at 80km altitude. After this, it slows down as it enters mesosphere and at about 60km it enters stratosphere whereby it starts slowing faster. By 20km it enters troposhpere and there its velocity declines rapidly.

The intercept was "within" 30km, not at 30km. However, 30km is the maximum altitude. I may be wrong about Mach 5 of MRBM at 20km, but it definitely is not more than 6-7Mach at 20km.
Yes but it does not decelerate from Mach 12 to Mach 2 or Mach 5. Within 30km of Earth's atmosphere is still above 100km. But to cut a long story short, this was an SRBM intercept, not an MRBM intercept.

By the way, the latest intercept was of a 1500km MRBM, not 2000km. Sorry for my mistake before. 1500km MRBM have typical speed at 15km altitude (not 20km) of 5Mach.

I don't think India has tested MRBM of higher range against AAD yet.
Link?

130km intercept is not possible by Indian BMD till date. India has two BMD - AAD and PDV for upto 30km and 80km altitude respectively. Only AAD has been fully successful so far and PDV is not yet as successful as desired.

The maximum speed of MRBM is about 4km/s and that happens before reentry to atmosphere in stratosphere. Once the RV enters the 80km altitude they start decelerating due to air drag overwhelming the gravity. So, by 15-20km, the velocity comes to 5Mach and impact velocity is at about 2Mach for 2000km IRBM.

The first PDV intercept happened at 120Km.

Okay but that's endo-atmospheric, any video.

It'll be a couple of Mach below its peak speed. There's hardly any air above 20km.
There is air from Mesosphere (90km) onwards which offer significant resistance. The air resistance drastically increases in stratosphere at 60km where air becomes dense. 20km is the height of troposphere, bottom most layer of atmosphere. The meteors are burnt up in mesosphere zone which shows the air resistance here.

Here is the video of an older intercept of AAD:

Yes, but we are not sure of the speed of incoming warhead or the difficulty level. PDV has not received much of testing which shows that it may not have been developing as intended. So, as of now, PDV is not to be considered as a success story

PDV is considered a success story. That's why they are now working out the LSP details.

Meteors are fricking huge though and travelling at many dozens of Mach or even 100+ Mach. A warhead by comparison is very small and slick.

Your posts are so knowledgeable and interesting , you really are an asset to the forum , please keep posting , your content is like a breath of fresh air.

I appreciate the sentiment, but honestly I'm probably going to leave internet forums for good by the end of the year. I don't have the same levels of motivation to discuss, argue or share info with others that I did when I first started out. It's just become a source of anxiety for me at a time when I have too much going on at work, raising a child (and likely having another in the near future) and needing to focus on other aspects of my life that forums are taking to much time away from, even with only one or two posts a day. Heck, I don't even have the same interest in updating the threads that have been the primary reason I've been around on forums for so long:

Norwegian Armed Forces

So while I very much appreciate that I've been able to be a source of info, entertainment and quality here, I'm not likely to stick around too much longer. I've just too much going on elsewhere that needs my attention in its fullest.

There will be more forums, more advancement in technology, more debates/arguments....this will be a never ending process. Focus on your priorities and the knowledge you have shared so far is here to stay. Thank you and Good Luck with everything you aim to achieve. :) Ha det fint

Yes entirely and not only that, Chinese operate S-400 also. They know everything about this system. THAAD is something which neither chinese nor Russians have a clue about and that is the reason for emergency purchase of it. US can sell stuff on emergency basis to its major allies without the permission of Senate and take the approval later citing operational requirements. AND they do not need to position their own operators if the agreement for protection of IPR is signed between two nations. India signed it an year back if my memory serves me right.

Thankyou sir. So if Chinese knew everything about it then they must have shared their knowledge with Pakistan too. Isn't this fact make the S400 a worthless purchase???

Sir, but haven't we already paid for S400 which would be delivered in the next few years? If yes, are we looking at using S400 against Pakistan and THAAD against China? In my opinion, this is highly unlikely.

Lastly. even if such a thing happens, is it even possible to integrate both the systems together into our integrated air defense network?

If we do have money and if it's really being offered we should immediately buy it. There nothing in its league out there period. It will bust any Chinese missile from east as well as west no matter how manuvering the missile or RVs are.

S 400 is an anti aircraft weapon. it's utility against BMs are limited, it's even inferior to PAC-3 SAM system.
THAAD on the other hand is pure terminal BMD system design to tackle manuvering RVs.

Just like our flankers aint the same, so will be the S400 systems.

Sharing the knowledge with Pakistanis? About what? How many wheels does the trucks have?

Pakistanis have had vigorously tested Rafales way before us. Knowing and having two capabilities are two different things.

Please my posts on this topic on relevent thread. I did not like this deal. Russians somehow manged to hoodwink us into believing that S-400 they will supply to us will be superior to chinese stuff.

Saving grace for us is Israeli systems which have blown holes thru Russian stuff repeatedly and our IAF operates with them with even Israeli AF pilots operating with IAF.
