US May Offer THAAD System to India to Block Russian S-400 Deal

The radar AN/TPY-2 seems impressive.. We could try our hand at reverse engineering it like we did for Greenpine radar for our BMD program.. Though THAAD is prohibitively costly..

Now, what happened to phase 2 of our BMD program.. Its been years since we have been hearing about AD-1 and AD-2 interceptors, but there has been no test. Is PDV mk2 used for ASAT, AD-1 ?

Lower band radar are highly susceptible to jamming and fooling due to their poor bandwidth and resolution and they can not provide firing solution.
Yes, But the missiles carry seekers, inculing IR ones. Once the missile is near enough of its target, it can catch it.
Low band radars can drastically reduce the space where other radars (ie X band ?) can track and elaborate a fire solution.

BMD - Phase 1 as advanced as THAAD? And we still have no confirmation whatsoever on it's deployment. Just tidbits of information. I would've thought that we'd not be coy in announcing successful commissioning of such systems across the land.

They are talking about deploying it in Delhi.

Supposed to start this year.

PDV Mk2 was a fake name for the ASAT.

They have been setting it all up since many years now. Three BMD sites are under construction.

This isn't just some truck with some tubes sticking out from the top.
I think we'd both agree that 3 years is an abnormally long time to set up BMD. They aren't setting up an experimental rail gun or laser set up are they?

3 years is not a long time if you look at the location they are building those BMD sites. these BMD and C&C sites are need to be well protected against CBERN attacks. It takes time. Specially when you are building things deep underground in mountains.

One of those sites is in Rajasthan, if I'm not mistaken. Which mountains do you have there except the Aravalli range & I don't think the site is anywhere near that range ? Besides these are BMD not BM sites to be concealed deep within mountains.

A BMD facility is a large base. And you need multiple such bases set up first. Only after that you need to get those trucks with tubes on 'em.

Depending on the size of the base, it can take a few years for sure, possibly even a decade if necessary, if being built in phases, although the base itself will be operational in a few years at IOC level, if not FOC.

Such bases are typically built under hills, with C&C inside the hills and also deep underground. Only the radar and its supporting infrastructure are outside the hill, sticking out from the top preferably.

BMD ain't no joke. It takes years to set up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the US THAAD system in RoK is up & running in just 2-3 years. How come?

THAAD is air transportable. It's meant to be used as a tactical system, like the S-400. Which is why the missiles are small and the radar is X band, which implies it's going to be smaller than a radar made from L or S band T/R modules, enough to make it air transportable.

Ours has much bigger multi-band sensors with a likely space surveillance and ASAT role as well.

The US has made a tactical system because they don't consider SRBMs and MRBMs to be a threat to them in North America, so they needed a system that can be quickly used to protect forward deployed assets and their allies. For India, the main threat is SRBMs, MRBMs and IRBMs, so our focus is different. Hence the use of large multi-band sensors and bigger interceptors based on a two-tier system.

Rajasthan site is on aravalli range near Beawar.

Huge missile like PDV cannot intercept new generation of manuvering SRBMs , MRBMs or sophisticated manuvering RVs. you need a system like THAAD , PAC 3 or Stunner system.
